This is something of a confession… but on the weekend of the play-off final, I had old friends to stay. It was a long standing arrangement; they had their tickets well before we ever looked likely to be back at Wembley. So I paid for Y Goch Junior and Senior to go to Wembley and consoled myself at the prospect of watching the game on Sky in Aber. The landlord of my local assured me it would be on in the Ship. So we turned up, before the game in good time for a few beers when…… Did anyone else spot 3pm kick off was also the start of the England-Wales Ruby match? Totally slipped my mind. Obviously every screen every bar in the whole of Aberystwyth was tuned to the rugby, with hordes of beered up red shirted locals getting comfortable before kick-off. After a running for pub to pub and pleading with several landlords, eventually we found a pub who was prepared to retune one small screen to the football, much to the displeasure of rather large local who had bagged his sheet two hours earlier. The rest of course is history. Except to say that the crowd gathered around one small screen shouting for the Super Reds (not just the egg chasing reds) made much more noise than the rest of the town combined. As a result interest started to drift from the large screens to the Wembley. So while it might be fair to say that the Welsh don’t generally support England. There are now lots of them in Aberystwyth who do support Barnsley!!!
Glad you managed to watch it mate The Welsh are a decent bunch in my opinion, their miners supported the NUM not like the lot round where I live in South Derbyshire.
The Welsh fans come across as very Donny-esque. Slightest bit of success and they start acting like absolute cnuts, thinking they're billy big b*llocks, with a right to the big stage.
