Although i'd been to Wembley several times before nothing compared to going there with my home town club.I remember going up Wembley Way and meeting and hugging mates of mine who never ever thought after the dark days of the mid sixties and early seventies that our club had made it to the home of football. It was a very emotional day with quite a few grown blokes with tears in there eyes.I remember saying to my son never mind the result just enjoy the occasion.Little did I know it would take me three months to get over the defeat. The second visit to the new Wembley had different emotions.I felt proud that we had got to the semis of the greatest cup competition in the world. Now to a possible return.I hear some say its a micky mouse cup but to clubs like Barnsley its an occasion that doesn't happen too often. This cup is designed for clubs like us,(league one and two teams). It might be micky mouse when you're in the Premiership and Championship but to us we should embrace it.Lets hope we can all celebrate tonight and look forward to Wembley revisited.
I was there at both of those too pal. I actually was more gutted second time round, not sure why, I think the Ipswich game the novelty of us actually having been there carried it. Also they were a bit better through the season if not by much on the day, let's face it had that first half penalty gone in we would probably have won, that save by Wright from Hristov was pretty special too, but whilst obviously I was disappointed, I went home at least in part happy and excited at having seen Barnsley at Wembley, compete, score two and arguably be a bit unlucky. Ipswich were probably better equipped to play in the premier league, they went on to prove that by finishing fifth and only three points off champions league qualification. We had Keith brown. I'm still not over the odejayi miss though. After having beaten Liverpool and Chelsea, even though Cardiff were favourites on paper I genuinely believed we'd win. To lose one nil in a damp squib and see him miss that clean through chance killed me. (I was actually some distance away so for a good five/ten seconds I thought he'd scored, I was given an old work colleague's posh club Wembley seats for the day. Very nice, leather seat, free program, free bottle of carlsberg (only one), exclusive indoor area to buy food and drinks and so on. You can walk the full corridor all the way around the stadium in the second tier too. Only trouble was it was towards the Cardiff end.) I don't agree about the jpt. I think it is a pointless competition that gives unnecessary extra fixtures - I have said so enough times. I don't want us to lose tonight but I won't be at Wembley on 3 April if we get there, I'm genuinely not interested in the competition. I'll wait until May (!!) I do understand your viewpoint though, and that was a good read.
I'm not over the Odejayi miss, either. I've never watched a replay of anything to do with that Cardiff game. I love to listen to the FA Cup final, but I just locked myself away from it in 2008. I couldn't face it. I was just pleased Portsmouth won, and denied a lot of scruffy, 'orrible Taffs the glory. Many Cardiff fans were reight scumbags that day of the semi: they're second on my list of 'clubs I'd celebrate going out of existence.' That FA Cup should've been ours. Three Championship teams and Portsmouth (who were pretty unconvincing when they beat West Brom. With a fair wind, we may have taken them down.) I cried like **** when we lost. Not ashamed to admit it. I'm only 37 now, but that cup run was the one chance we'll have in my lifetime of winning something proper.
i was there a few days after my grandad died . he would have loved itt.. took me since i was 7. he went to bumhole lane for the 1912 replay though. happy times getting brick chuck at ya on a cold winters night at rochday with about 200 there
For the newer members, if we get through tonight I'll re-post my Wembley memory of the FA cup semi in 2008. I promise it's a belter. We need to get through first though. For more long standing members, it will probably be the third time you've seen it, so apologies in advance.
Hey up Bill, The first Wembley trip even though the result was a let down, the weekend we had was absolutely brilliant. Hoggy booking half the lads into the Hilton and the other half in the Cumberland hotel where we bumped into Barry fry as he was leaving after spending the morning humping a tidy blonde piece. As soon as we got in the Cumberland hotel I remember Dave bowmer getting the beers in and yelling "arrrrrr fkin much!!". I remember blue "bri moxon" drunk as a skunk playing the hotel piano Me and your rob going into MacDonalds and nobody being able to understand us. Dave bowmer getting a lucky charm chain off some black lass he was chatting up, years later he through the chain in the stand at millmoor and they went into admin a few month later.... that's just how lucky that chain is. Most people won't be able to relate to the folk I'm talking about but to me the times shared and the laughs we had and being able to share it with people like you, my dad, Barry Phillips, Jim, blue, bowmer, Chris ramsden etc is more important than the result even though it didn't feel like it at the time Dave
Hi Dave, can you remember the American with that great big cigar? He was sat with the black girl before Bowmer stuck his neck in.As for Blue I'd never seen him sober in them days.Happy memories indeed.Lets hope we can do it all again in April.
first one against Ipswich was the first time i had been , left our new born for the first time with his grandma,my nephew who would have been 3 slept all the way through the game, walking down wembley way with all the REDS fans was something to remember, but the waiting in the carpark to set off home i remember well because we seemed to be surrounded by happy Ipswich fans , our mini bus was very quiet, diddn,t like the second visit at all , i was the mini bus driver , when we arrived everybody just dispersed leaving myself and my lad alone, OMG i needed a pi$$ found macdonalds but the queue , i to this day do not know how i made it to the front of the queue, kieran still remembers and takes the pi$$ now, the journey home i took the wrong turning out of wembley and went a good hour out of the way with all the cardiff traffic, then the said nephew from the first visit now a lot older was violently sick all the way home, happy days !! think if we win tonight i,m off on the coach
Remember the really friendly atmosphere at the first one and a fantastic game of football despite the result -second one had a nasty feel to it on the way out and didn't really enjoy the game. I preferred Cardiff - layout was much better - designated pubs made for a great feeling before and after the game
45 years of supporting the reds and never in my lifetime did i think i would see the hallowed turf of wembley with yje reds pon it but 2008 it came true, took my daughter and her then boyfriend cost arm and a leg and i still cant forgive odedonkey for that miss, final whistle i cried had my head in my hands then my daughter said to me "dont worry dad we will be back" all i said "not in my lifetime we wont" but now looking at the 90 minutes tonight and how close we are to the wembley turf i think she knew something and hopefully april 3rd i can double celebrate a day at wembley and reds win and the birth of my first grandson due the same weekend #InJohnsonWetrust #SSWlegend
Same here. I've tried to wipe the Oddjob miss from my memory but it still lurks there and creeps out from time to time. I think the trip home from the FA cup semi was the longest most miserable trip home ever, far worse than the play off final against Ipswich.
