Why was Michael Parkinson introduced to the players before hand, why him?, who not the JPT directors at least they earned the right by their sponsorship? If Dickie Bird is such a great Barnsley Fc fan as he portays, why oh why did he look so miserable when the TV scanned onto him and Parky very shortly after we had won a cup at Wembley for the first time ever in a hundred plus years. They both look as though they had just been handed the bill for their hospitality enjoyed at the stadium. Even by his standards he was looking really miserable. Compare his/ their reactions to those of true supporters in the ground, the emotion (close to tears) of Patrick Cryne, the air punching by Hecky, even the broad grin and vigorous clapping of our former manager. Then look at the clip on the telly of Dicky with Barnsley fans (staged for television, where he knew the cameras were on him) all smiles and lively and cheering. Could it be one face for the public and another in private, I was so disappointed to see their reactions. Granted he was the worlds best umpire, but to me he is no Barnsley FC fan, unless someone who knows him really well can tell me otherwise.
I saw the clip. It was Parky telling Dicky all his problems with Prostrate Gland. Dicky looked Piss,d off , pardon the Pun
I would suggest that both of them were feeling very similar emotions to PC, and that knowing that the cameras would be sure (as ever) to pick them out, trying to avoid showing it. When you're with a gang of lads having a laugh it's a bit different. Anyway, it's Sir Michael to thee
The Sales Director of Johnstone's Paints was the lead guest and was introduced to the players before Parkinson. I don't get the hostility towards Parkinson to be honest. Football Daft is one of my favourite sports books and anyone reading it would immediately recognise his affection for our club.
This battering of Dicky Bird is starting to wind me up. I was sat next to him yesterday, literally 6 feet to his right. When he first walked up and saw the stadium, he was crying his eyes out. He was emotional throughout to the point where he looked shattered at the end. So have a bit of think before you judge someone based on a single image on the Telly.
Looks like a scene from the end of the muppet show I'm not a Barnsley lad, so not fully understanding the hostility to either. Parky is the more distant both in his relationship to the club and to the Town. Dickie - I used to see him regularly in the 80s / 90s in the West Stand and the players lounge - he could talk the hind legs off a donkey but there was no doubting he was a fan. Sadly they are both knocking on a bit now, and it shows, so it's no longer fair really to have a pop at them. All IMHO, obviously.
You must have been sat within touching distance of me then Dyson. Agree with your comments, he was emotional throughout and was always willing to have a chat with those around. I'm sure the cameras could have panned onto any one of us during the match and we could have looked the same......
In that case I take back my comments, I can only comment on what I saw, I appreciate you correcting me on what you saw.
May be it's an age thing. I'm only 64 and I was exhausted after the game. I was using so much nervous energy. When 6 minutes went up I nearly died. I only got giddy when they got the ball to the corner flag just before the ref blew for time.
Because he's connected to the prostate charity ??? All those buckets being waved around, players wearing the badges was a big clue
That's the one, it was mentioned on one of the reports he was on the pitch in an official capacity as their ambassador.
Dicky Bird's been a season ticket holder at Barnsley longer than most people on here including me who's only had one 25 years. I bumped into him in a cafe last week and even though it was the first time I'd met him he found time to talk to me. He's as passionate as anyone about the Reds. As befits most Barnsley fans (you only need to read this board), he also likes a good moan and had a pop at the M1 whilst I was chatting to him. I do not honestly get this animosity to anyone remotely famous from Barnsley. Why do people always have to take a snipe at one of our own?
Totally disagree ,in fact have polar opposite opinion of you ,but even if a portion of it was relevant why does it bother you so much?. It's not costing thee owt is it?
Does it really matter : Dickie is a life long red and will chat to anyone about his sporting loves.Dyson is spot on (new shirt needed Liam)Parky has bought good cred to the area even though he has his career and life darn sarth. One camera shot kills?
Absolutely agree. It's a great read as is Cricket Daft. I don't understand people's problem. He played cricket for the town, followed the reds as a lad, has never tried to hide where he comes from, turns up to see us. So he left Barnsley to purse his career. So what?! Maybe he should have spent his career at the Barnsley Chronicle? ffs.
I'll never understand why Barnsley people are so hard on their celebrities. Why can't we be proud of the fact that we can produce them? There was a bloke on the Danny Baker show on Saturday morning who was a Barnsley fan and Danny said something about Parkinson and this guy went to denigrate him straight away. Fortunately Danny cut him off and moved on. Dicky is salt of the earth Barnsley, supports them and lives there. Parkinson achieved star status and moved away, so what? Neither of them would ever deny being a Barnsley fan. I've heard that Parky goes to Reading, if he lives there and the chairman is his mate that doesn't give me a problem. It's a long way from Reading to Barnsley for a home game and I'd bet he isn't a Reading fan when they play us.
