The Mason Holgate saga has resulted in him being back at Oakwell after supposed interest from Swansea, Newcastle and Aston Villa. Mmmm... Something not quite right. I've worked in the media and know that football agents simply put names into journalist's heads and try and hype up a move. Sometimes it works; quite often it doesn't. I'm not saying that definitely happened here but it seems bizarre that a player allegedly on the brink of a big Premier League move ends up on trial at another club and then fails to land a deal there. Mason and his representatives probably need to eat some humble pie and sign a 2-3-year deal at Barnsley.
I have a strong suspicion that Mason and his agent have had their heads turned by the John Stones saga. He's good - but nowhere near that good. This business has been an unwelcome distraction. It won't have helped his cause that while he showed his usual composure when he came on last night, the defence with him and Roberts in for Nyatanga and Bree went from looking solid and organised to looking somewhat shambolic. Having placed a question mark over his commitment, Mason needs to re-sign and get his head down for a season or so. If he works, that big move will come about provided he makes further progress.
I've said all along that he is being badly advised by his agent or somebody. I honestly think somebody had him believing that he was as good as Stones and it all spiralled from there. I'm glad he's back, I rate him at our level but I hope he's learned something from this experience.
I think it is; he may be a little disappointed which is understandable but given time back with his mates and once he starts playing again I think he'll be ok. If he isn't LJ will get shut.
They were never interested. For the simple reason he's not good enough. He's not really proved it at league one level. The club gave him a lifeline when he was 15 years old and this is how he repays them. I'm just glad he turned down a new contract because he's done himself out of a pay rise.
Holgate's agent has strong links with a number of media outlets and appears to have simply been touting for business. While as Man U have said we will take a look which suits all parties.

Seems a young lad badly advised. Easily forgiveable. There was obviously some interest but there's a difference between interest and investing millions in a player even in the premiershit.
