RE: If Grayson goes They've got enough dodgy Latvian money behind them though I thought? Obviously that doesn't automatically translate into success but they've got more spending power than quite a few in our league.
Gone to an excellent club renowned for playing football as it should be,like we used to play pre-Davey.
RE: if that's the case................ "ongoing project", perfect for hiding dirty Eastern European money!
It makes you wonder Whether there are more bargains to be picked in Irish football (Doyle & Long at Reading are another two that spring to mind)? Livingston signed Hoolahan from Shelbourne, before Blackpool picked him up.
Tried that one We signed Jason Byrne from Shelbourne year before last. He was the leading scorer in the Eircom league for a number of seasons, outscoring Kevin Doyle. Played more Champions League games than any other Eircom player. Scored 1 for us in the limited appearances he made. Was being marked out of the game in friendlies against Welsh League opposition. Cows backsides & banjos spring to mind. He then decided to try to drink Cardiff dry and almost succeded before he was shipped back post-haste.
The talent appears to be there I'm not saying it's the answer, but to a club like Barnsley who will have a limited budget when compared to the likes of, say, Birmingham City, there may be an opportunity to get better value for money for a player. When a player like Robert Earnshaw commands a fee of £2.65m, then Simon Davey will be challenged to the extreme to pick up a quality striker for a lot less. Certainly the club cannot afford to fork out over £0.5m on players again (Mostto, Christensen) and get next to nothing in return, be it appearances, goals or incoming transfer fees.
