One thing that was mentioned last night was this rumour that there are only a couple of years life left in the West Stand before it has to be knocked down. THIS IS UNTRUE
GS and PC didn't know where that had come from.

Rumour Alan Bloore or Owen said at the previous meeting "The west stand will have passed its sell by date in a couple of years" Had they said that in 1980 they may have had a point!
Especially the bogs They are historic One of the expeiences of footy I remember from my earliest days an open air wall with no roof - Just like the bogs used to be for the infants at Kings Road when I was a nipper. No where else can you get the same experience (well unless you go to France where they dont even bother enclosing the wall
The West Stand has not been classified as a listed building but has been declared a........ A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the botanical interest in the mens urinals No where north of the Zambezi river has ferns been found in such diverse abundance. Natural England (the Government watch dog on all things wild) have released a statement saying "in all the years of botanical research within the UK and dating back to the time of the great man himself Charles Darwin, we have never seen bogs otherwise know as pissoils like these".
LOL The "facilities" are nothing short of scandalous, the stand an embarassment. Barring a financial disaster, I expect it will be replaced within 5 years at the worst.
Shame - it's a disaster waiting to happen. Oh aye it's a glorious antique and all that but I bet it struggles to get a fire safety certificate every year.
RE: Especially the bogs They still have bogs like that at York City if you're ever that way and feeling all nostalgic!
Gordon Shepherd did say that the West Stand was safe, had it not been so, then they would not have been able to open it to fans. PC did say that if it ever got overcrowded and full, then they would have to think about it, but at the moment, they couldn't fill it and it wasn't a priority to change it. He made the perfectly valid point that: Why bother building a big, new stand when you cannot fill the current one? They had decided to put the money into team building instead. Who can argue with that? That's what was said. YoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooReds!
He also correctly stated that the ground is owned by Barnsley Community Assets and not BFC - hence team building and stand building are unconnected other than by PC's generosity. The Oakwell Masterplan could throw up possibilities and if housing developements are forthcoming no doubt the stand could be developed with the funds generated.
Who can argue with that? ... well.... Whether there's 7 or 7000 in there it's still a potential death trap - just too much wood. Back in the day, I had the opportunity to have a full season in there - no charge. But prefered to stand on the Kop (though there were times in January that I wished I hadn't). Not sure if they still use the offices in there for admin and the likes but a smaller / safer stand would be preferable to some I'm sure - besides, all them splinters up your arse doesn't help either. Do they still flog cushions? or have they been banned?
As I said, I'm not up for arguing or confrontation, just passing on what was said. Have a chat with Gordy and Patrick if you feel strongly about this issue.
Fire in the Brewery Stand..............I saved your live (yer *******) Nar, i know you are not going to beleive this. But many of you would not be here today if it wern't for ME.............Young Nudger Can you remember the Brewery Stand ??? And I know this is a massive coincidence................but a couple of weeks after the Bradford City fire, I can't remember who we were playing at the time, but the Brewery Stand caught fire. Yes, the totally wooden stand caught fire, the floor boards in that stand were on fire. There were a few thousand people stood in the stand at the time. I saw the fire and rushed out to the back of the stand and grabbed a container full of water that was being used at the small burger bar (caravan type place) at the back of the stand and ran back in and put the fire out. Now I know some of you wern't born then. But your fathers may have been at that match. And just ask yourself this - WOULD I BE HERE TODAY IF ME FATHER HAD GOT BURNT BAllAcks. No, of course you wouldn't. So next time yer see me...............mines a pint Its true
No intent to argue Tina lass. I just remember how shocked I was after the Bradford fire is all. The West stand has alarming similarities.
There's a pretty big hole in that story Nudger The Bradford City fire was the last day of the season, Saturday May 11th 1985. Barnsley didn't play any matches a couple of weeks after this, we completed the season on the 11th May (away at Oxford I think). We didn't play again until August. Seems like your memory is playing a few tricks. Maybe you stubbed out a cig that someone had left in an ashtray in a pub or summat.
There's that, and also.... ...wooden floorboards? In the Brewery Stand? Surely it went straight from concrete terracing to the new East Stand? What wooden floorboards?
