Fowler, 32, flew to America recently expecting to have minor surgery to cure a long-standing problem.

But medical staff had to perform a 'micro-fracture' of the hip bone after discovering a more serious condition.

A Cardiff spokesman played down reports that Fowler's season is over, but admitted his return is "not imminent".

"Nobody knows how long he will be out," said the club spokesman. "He is here having treatment and we will see how it goes."

Fowler, who was sent for surgery after an ankle injury last month ruled him out for two weeks, signed a one-year contract with Cardiff in July.

The Bluebirds do have an option for another year, and talks are expected to take place over the next few weeks over his future at Ninian Park.

    Top bloke..

Met him when they played us earlier in the season, he spent time talking to my 7 year old and had photo's etc..

Probably the best finisher i've ever seen, Benitez gave him the best platform to retire on at the end of
last season and he should have took it, shame...

Why is it a waste of money?

Got them plenty of publicity, sold shirts etc. and scored more goals than a certain set of strikers.
    Ok for me.

No way should he play before next season after having that done. 6-8 weeks non-weight bearing for a start. Many American footballers have had similar surgery (usually on knees) and rushed back to become cripples!
