I love Santana. I got into them from their cover of The Zombies' "She's not there". They also did Cale's Sensitive Kind. I would put both Cale and Santana in my top four artists and have a look at the JJ Cale songs that have been covered by all and sundry.
This is a much underrated cover. It keeps all the qualities of the original, but they do it their own way, brilliantly.
I won't get into all the Husker Du, Replacements comments, oh ****... Ash? Not tight enough to compare them to the Ramones, but a similar style. Here I go again. It's old punks syndrome. It is a catchy bit of power pop. I kinda like it.
I saw them on the Deserters Songs anniversary tour at the Brude & their own sound man fecked it up. Was a shame, not the first time touring bands haven't engaged the brilliant sound man there to assist & paid the price. I caught them 3-4 times before that too. For me they ran out of steam a bit in later years.
Here are a couple I like. One that does a different take on the original, one that doesn't stray too far.
I’ve always loved this version more than the original by the Kaiser Chiefs. Feels like they ‘Cribsified’ it.
All Along the Watchtower - Hendrix You do Something to me - Skunk Anansie Summertime Blues - The Who All of UB40’s Labour of Love (before they realised how easy it is to play to populism)
Any Rock songs that are played in the "wrong style" or on "different" instruments. 2 Cellos, Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Party Gurdy are just 3 who come to mind.
