Did not make any sarnies today cos the world was going to end and I could not see the point in wasting time making some snap, then what happens ?? FOOK ALL !!!!

    been starving all day :D :D :D :D

Wait for it wait for it - have some patience

Today was send a single beam round one direction then the other day

No collisions so no black holes created

Next week send to beams round in opposite directions simultaniously

Then the bit I dont quite understand

    They plan low energy collisions

Now I am thick as I thought two beams of photons travelling at the speed of light in opposite directions would hit at 2xc which is pretty damn fast. Dont know how you start with low energy.

I seem to recall hearing once

That in certain extreme conditions, you can have "slow light". Allegedly it can travel as slowly as 30 odd mph. Maybe they're going to utilise that somehow?

    They're not sending photons round

It's protons mate. If it were photons nowt would happen as they have no mass. I guess the low energy collisions will be due to the fact that they won't have the protons up to full speed.

Ah that makes a lot more sense Thanks

Also explains the bit I read about gradually speeding up the beams to near light speed eventually

    wow farnham

i studied physics and u hit the nail.......well almost

the particles can be slowed. but its not quite slowed as not speeded up!

have spent the last few days explaining the situation....... a black hole is highly unlikely as the atoms are not travelling at zero gravity (as such - in controlled environments - space is not a controlled environment)

the "machine" is only being set working, it will take a long time to get to full speed upto a year to be able to explain anything

jeeeeeeeeeeezzz......... i sound like i know what i am on about lol

RE: I seem to recall hearing once

Light travels at different speeds through different substances. The speed of light as a constant is the speed it travels through a vacuum. It travels much slower through other substances.

However, that's all academic for even though the LHC will be using a vacuum it's protons they're firing round it not light.

and there will be no 2 x c collisions

2 masses approaching each other at approching c will collide at a little under c.

    Have that

    Indeed you're right Jay

Refractive index is a measure of how much the light is slowed down - high refractive index = greater retardation.

Does this also work with intelligence?

high refractive index = greater retardation

    Could explain a lot! :D

    Right then next stupid question

They are using magnets to speed up the protons (got my 'r's and 'h's sorted now) - I can get how this would work to get a beam whizzing round in one direction. How do you simultaniously get another beam whizzing round in the other direction

The money could have been better spent on preventing famine and medical research.</p>

Wasted on a bunch of physisists who get a much bigger slice of the science budget than the research deserves.

here goes - best i understand it

The magnets steer the protons around the circle and keep them in line. Without the magnets they would just fly into the side and wouldnt get all the way round. Just like keeping a car on a track.

At a certain point in the circuit an electronic pulse is fired to speed the protons up.

Nothing can go at the speed of light apart from light which is why they can only get them to 99.99....whatever the speed of light.

Even at low energies the protons are travelling at this 99.9999... bla speed of light. As you cant get an object to go past this speed what happens instead is it aquires more mass. Get what im saying? It cant go any faster but if they keep increasing speed it gets increased mass instead - which is where the increased energy collisions come in.

The old collider at Fermilab where they have been colliding particles was a 1/4 the size of the LHC and therefore couldnt get any where near the same energies - and they were using a different particle.

blimey, that's the clearest explaination I've read.

I've no idea if it's right obviously, but I'm buying in.

Cheers, I liked that explanation except for the "electronic pulse"

    Whats an &quot;electronic pulse&quot; ?
