if we win 2-0 tomorrow night and then get identical result to Plymouth on Sat (ie both draw 1-1, lose 1-0, win 1-0 etc) we would have an identical record to them going into the last day - same GD same goals scored same goals conceeded. Draw with each other and would finish identical. If us and Plymouth were the third and fourth bottom after that scenario is there a play-off in those circumstances? or the record between the two team during the season? presumably someone would let us know before the last day so one team would know to play for a draw or not. not hugley unfeasible is it? surely can't come down to alphabetical order
my friend says it might come down to who ever has scored most goals in the season, if thats the case we have a problem
Play off "If two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored at the end of the season and the championship, a promotion place, play-off place or relegation place is at stake they will then play off to decide who finishes higher." http://www.sportinglife.com/football/live/tables/cc_champ.html
but if we win 2-0 tomorrow both teams would have the following record -: P 44 W 13 D 11 L 20 F 43 A 55 absolutely identical
Possibly. Although home advantage on second leg would be an issue. I'll have a poke around and see what I can find out . . .
RE: Possibly. Although home advantage on second leg would be an issue. can you imagine how sickening that one would be? I used to like the play offs between divisions with promotion hopeful and relegation hopefuls though. They seemed fair in one way
So if it were between second and third One team would have to have a play off for the promotion or the play off and when they lost play off in the play offs. That would be a lot of matches to fit in between the end of the season and May! wouldn't record against each other have any weight?
if that happened, surely... ......we would finish higher, as we would then have a better head to head?
The plot thickens According to the Football League regulations, I think Sporting Life (see my earlier post) have got it wrong: "9.2 If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements approved by the Board on a neutral ground. The net gate money after deducting the usual match expenses shall be equally divided between the two competing Clubs. Any Club staging such a play off match shall be entitled to charge as an expense against the receipts of the match 10% of the gross gate receipts after deduction of Value Added Tax. In the event of such a match being arranged by the Board to be played on the ground of a Club which is not a member of The League, then a similar charge as an expense against the receipts of the match shall be paid to The League who shall otherwise be responsible for the financial arrangements made with the Club staging the match. These provisions shall determine the ranking of Clubs in their respective Divisions." http://www.football-league.co.uk/staticFiles/78/3/0,,10794~888,00.pdf
in which case..... http://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/bbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=139498&mid=931254#M931254
RE: Neutral Ground... If the FA / FL have naything to do with it (which they will) it'll be somewhere like Charltons ground at 16:00 hours on a Sunday. (wnkr)
The Play Off Scenario can still happen If we beat Coventry 2-0, that makes us identical after 44 games Then we won against Wolverhampton 2-0, whilst they lost on saturday by the same score. Then they beat us 2-0. That would leave the position as both clubs on P 46, W 14, D 11, L 21, F 45, A 57, Pts 53... and with us both having won 2-0 at home against the other. However, given that 5 other clubs besides us still have to reach 53 points, (assuming Southampton are 2nd bottom) it would be v unlikely that 53 points would be the 3rd and 4th bottom positions, in which case it wouldn't matter. Has anyone ever gone down with 53?. I thought 52 was the record (was it Millwall?)
