Is that people from Surrey or people who like stir-fry?

I went to Woking Classes once at night school.

I think it was a bad idea, but some will percieve it as a benefit to the working man

That wasn't done to benefit the tenant - it was done to separate the individual from the state

But the working man, the average labour voter, was not forced into buying.

They could have seen through the machiavelian subtext and thought of the socialist greater good.

But in reality they are all tories under the skins so jumped in and not only bought their own but their mums as well.

I'm sure that the thought of leaving an inheritance for their children was at forefront of their minds rather than any political ideology

I'm not necessarily saying it was a bad thing but let's not have any confusion that it was done to benefit the working classes

    That is rubbish.

I bought mine because the Tories were threatening to sell the Council stock to private land lords.

Nothing to do with greed at all if it was I would have sold it after 3 years.

In the long term it has been a bad move for the Country as a whole. It took a load of social housing out of the system and forced up house prices and cost of private rented accomodation.

It was also the start of the credit/debt boom.

    A very good example.
I guess that socialist principles were temporarily forgotten when purchasing houses at knock down prices then selling on at market rates!! Fecking capitalism eh!!

I conceed. The benefit was entirely coincidental.

The policy was designed to get more working classes with mortgages and the feeling that they had some notion of wealth and therefore reliance on actually working and voting tory through this fixation with house prices.

And to dilute the council tennant profile of a particular marginal constituency to ensure a greater probability of a tory election victory at local and national election level.

Yes, but had more attention been paid to the Health and Safety of miners they would not have suffered from lung ailments.

Not many mine owners voted for Nationalization in 48.

    Supported Grammar Schools

So bright kids from poor backgrounds would get a decent education tailored to their ability. For this reason my dad was the first in 4 generations of my family to go to uni instead of working down Dodworth Pit.

The opening post also begs the question why do governments only have to do things for the working class? What about the upper and middle classes and working class individuals who aspire to middle class lifestyle/careers?

It's middle class floating voters who are the difference between getting a Tory and Labour government, don't think many working class have ever really voted Tory in the modern political era.

    Factually Incorrect...

If all those in the Working Class voted Labour then Labour would have formed majority governments at every election since their inception - this has clearly not happened.
