Kozluk clears the ball from the penalty area, the Sheff Utd fans shout 'hand ball', but D'Urso gives nothing. The ball is cleared up to Campbell-Ryce who clearly handles the ball, at which point the linesman starts flagging and gesturing that a handball occurred. The ball then goes back deep into our half where a Sheff Utd player is brought down and D'Urso blows up for a foul. He then looks back at his linesman who is flagging and gesticulating that a handball has occurred at which point D'Urso gives a penalty as he assumes the linesman is referring to the Kozluk incident rather than the Campbell-Ryce incident. At this point the referee has not spoken to his linesman, so is not certain why he is flagging, but he has given the penalty. D'Urso then goes to speak with the linesman, who now realises that D'Urso has given the penalty, but rather than correct him and make him look a lovely person he agrees that Kozluk handled the ball and the penalty is given.
good theory but incorrect jay the linesman flagged and put his arm across his chest indicating a penalty. Somehow the linesman who is essentially stood on the front row of the stand can see the white lines of the opposing penalty box and can identify whether or not the ball is on the other side of that line when it is in the air. I wish I had this skill as I simply cannot say for sure whether they are in or out of the far box from in the stand and from the front row (stood up) you can't clearly see the lines.
nah, that bloke in stood on top of hill near metrodome gave it, or could it have been the pilot of a passing plane from 35,000 ft, or could have been 6,000 sheff utd fans.
Did he? THat would make sense as the linesman seemed to take an age to decide that it was handball, play had continued for a good few seconds before he flagged. If that is the case, is it actually OK for a 4th official to intervene, start muscling in and give penalties from 50 yards away. Was the 4th official trevor kettle?
lino gave it, flagged when ref waved play on , got his attention (finally) and then put flag across chest to indicate penalty. 4th official got involved cos davey and kidd were on pitch at lino
right. that was the way i saw it too from about 15 yards behind the dug outs. the linesman took a while to flag though.....
It was the linesman He took a while, but I saw him on the halfway line put the flag across his chest.
its a hard one to take.. from ponty end at the time i thought it was handball, but looking on Tv im not sure
