........ We get say 4 points from the next 2 games and we still haven't appointed a new gaffer

The players have obviously played for MM a la for Flicker against Leeds

We all realise last seasons exploits were down to MM and its gone boobs up this season cos Flicker got dilusions of grandeur and thought last season was down to him and changed our style

Bobby is recalled and plays like last year

We tighten up at the back and start scoring

Would we reject the 'cheap option'? Especially after last times failed recruitment drive?!?

    Mmmmmmmm (ponders)

Where is the evidence that the success of the back end of last season is down to Mellon and that this season's disaster is down to Flicker ignoring Mellon?

Does anyone have any proof of this or is it just (hopeful) speculation?

Personally I will be disappointed if it turns out that the new board are going to wait to see how Mellon gets on before deciding whether to recruit. I wish they would just go out and bring back Danny Wilson - if he'd come. We don't have the luxury of games to see how Mellon gets on. (BTW my preference for Wilson is my personal opinion and I'm entitled to it)

I would also love to know where the Star and other Twitter sources are getting the idea that Mellon will be given a run of games. I've nothing against the bloke, but where is the substance in the assertion that he has the ability to turn this mess around?

These media sources don't know any more than you or I......fact is we have Mellon in charge for at least one game and probably two, so being purely theoretical, he is in the driving seat.

In reality, I would expect Watkins and Mansford to have already got their plans in place and we will see a newly appointed manager very soon.

Would be foolish to allow our former assistant manager more games when we are bottom of the table. I'm not saying Mellon ain't a good coach, but if he was that good and persuasive, he would have been able to positively influence Flicker and the players.......and we wouldn't be bottom of the pile.

I was once advised that, as a manager, it is as important to be able to manage and influence up the business (to Board and manager) than it is down (to players). So Mellon, and any other assistant for that matter, should be able to influence the manager......he clearly hasn't this season!

    Or am I talking sh!te?

You forgot to add, that if the one directly above you is not listening (blocker), then you go the one above him/her. You cannot influence a blocker!

Mellon will not get the job

I predict an absolute towelling tonight and by 9.30pm panic on here will ensue and interviews will be taking place before Saturday. Our new manager will most probably be in the stands at Burnley.

    Educated guesswork.

I've been wondering that all week. I would imagine Flitcroft made the decisions both last season and this, with advice and opinions from Mellon (and Martin Scott), pretty much like all manager/assistant manager relationships.

I too would go for Danny Wilson. He's the outstanding first choice in my opinion. If Danny didn't want the job, or we couldn't agree a deal, I wouldn't automatically go with Micky Mellon, but I would interview him for the post, along with any other interesting candidates.

Doesn't sound like ***** to me. I would have thought that Mellon would have been able to influence Flitcroft if he truly believed that he was going about things wrong. We'll see tonight I guess. But, even if we win, I would still try to get Wilson in. Once again, my opinion.

That was how I saw it when I first read it. The fact is that we are all at a loss how Flitcroft could have been so successful end of last season and such an abject failure this season. I seem to remember the Mellon influence was proposed as a theory to explain this. This now seems to have transmogrified into a hard fact. I think more likely is that the team responded to Hill's sacking in a determined manner and we played well. The team gained confidence and this plays a huge part, especially over a short period of time when it can be sustained and there is an imperative "fight or flight" response. At the beginning of the new season those same drivers were not there. We get thumped on the first day, fail to win/score for a few and a lack of confidence takes over.

Maybe this demonstrates the fine line between success and failure. It seems important to me that we appoint a manager that can install confidence alongside a tactical ability to play to the current teams strengths - someone with a track record at this level, someone who has been consistent in getting teams to play well. Someone like Danny...

Not often you read a post with transmogrified in it on the bbs! You should post more often.

Nothing changed for me - still agree with every word that Epsom Red says and still want Danny Wilson.

    Thanks, that made me laugh.

I thought it was time to move on now that I've mastered the difference between "as" and "has".
