I'm told by a friend of his that he doesn't. He's "living the dream", apparently.

But if the club decide to accept a bid from a Prem club and he gets offered silly money then he'll take it, surely? I mean, wouldn't you? Especially if you back yourself, believe in your ability.

Its ok to believe in your ability, but he will have seen Hammill and Butterfield both go to Premier League teams and not play. He would be better having another year or two at this level before making the step up.

I agree, he's not old enough and he doesn't come across as very streetwise at all. Let him go when he's 21-22, meantime leave him with his family, his mates, the club and Bobby Hassell. He'll be a better footballer because of it. Then when he's ready, straight to Man U, no pillocking about with the Wigans in between.

Bit early to write off JB. Still think he's Prem quality. Know it, actually. But think he chose the wrong club. He'll come good again.
Still think there's a player in Hammill too. If he could sort himself out off the field, and learn the defensive side of his game he'd be a decent player in the Prem.

I take your point though, Scoff. But they obviously believed they were good enough to leave a struggling second tier club for more ambitious surroundings on far far better pay. I'd have done the same.

John seems like a very level headed lad, and I think he really enjoys playing for his hometown club.

I think it's unfair to compare him to the likes of Butterfield and Hammill, both were lads not from the town and both had a desire to play in the premier league.

I'm not saying John doesn't have that same desire, I just think he'll wait until he knows he's earned it, rather than jumping at the first sign of it.

Problem is though that now, even more so than ever, the discrepency in money is massive, much bigger than when Barnard turned Southampton down for example. If Stones is on an annual salary of around £50k now, he could concievably increase that tenfold with one move, with all the perks of being a Premiership footballer thrown in.

Someone on here mentioned Luke Potter the other day and he will still be in the back of every young Reds player's mind. Had Potter's injury come a few weeks into a £500k per year contract with someone like Fulham or Wigan he may never have needed to find an alternative career or, at the very least, he would have been given a very big cushion to make his next career move. I'm sure the new bigger contract must have been in Butterfield's mind when deciding over the move to Norwich. He must be fully aware that another injury to his knee could spell curtains, but the increase in his salary from Barnsley to Norwich will give him the security.

I've always said that if I had been good enough to be a professional footballer I would not wanted to have played for anyone other than Barnsley, but it woud be difficult to stick to that in light of the above figures. It's very unlikely that players like Matt Le Tissier could have remained loyal to even a lower Premiership team in this day and age with the even bigger discrepency between the £500k-£1m per year salaries that lower Premiership players earn and the £500k-£1m per month salaries that the better players in the top three teams earn.
