I'm reformatting the pc to get rid of winfixer once and for all and hopefully speed up the computer as well so does anybody have a reccomendation for a firewall that is free?

Also anti virus, I will be installing the one that I get with my internet provider but I dont really trust it to pick everything up so I'll no doubt just install it but not turn it on except once a month or so to let it run through. What other program is best reccomended? I was thinking AVG maybe?

    Thanks in advance

    Right:

    Free antivirus:
AVG or avast! avast! is better.

    Free firewall:
    Zone Alarm

Also get yourself Microsoft Antispyware and an alternative browser to Internet Explorer; personally I use Opera but Firefox is just as good just not as pretty on the eyes.

    I use

    AVG and Spybot.

Both free. Both have served me well up to now.

AVG has just isolated 2 Java viruses for me today and got rid.

AVG or Avast! for antivirus (I prefer AVG but there's nothing in it really)
Kerio or ZoneAlarm for firewall (Kerio is less intrusive in default mode - I prefer it)
Microsoft Antispyware for what it says on the tin
Firefox for browser. You still need IE for some poorly designed pages but Firefox has better compatibility than Opera.

    thanks for the advice

I'll get avast then if it is better than avg. At least I know that if it doesnt agree with me then I can just change it for AVG. It turns out that Zone Alarm comes with BT Yahoo anyway so that's good I guess.

Unfortunatly I'll have to stick with Internet Explorer because the old folk don't like opera or firefox but never mind at least i'll have protection from the other things.

My plan is to install all of the below (ive just downloaded them all onto a cd) and have them turned off so that I can run them if i ever get any problems or just periodically etc. The exception will be microsoft anti virus which i'll leave running.

What do you think? Should that keep me safe whilst not taking up too much processer whatnot?

    Thanks again
