</p> It's coming over on the news that, when they finish early, they want to get paid for going home. Surely they're not saying that are they?</p>
Yeah shock horror - they are not going to get paid for going home - instead they will have to go into the office and work till their shift ends. Poor Barstewards. My heart goes out to them.
I didn't know they could do that. </p> That explains a few things like why they pretend to have knocked with recorded deliveries or leave stuff at the gate. </p>
when I worked for them 30 years ago it was always job and off, never did work a full shift, but always got paid for it
I thought it was about losing the final salary pension scheme for new recruits but that surely can't be right because every fecker else in the country has lost that as well.
it's not just me they do it with then drives me nuts when they reckon they've rung the buzzer. takes longer to write the bloody slip out!
Its not quite as daft as it sounds There is a postie near us who runs all the way round his round so presumably delivers his letters in half the time of a normal postie so I suspect if he needs to go into the office for the second half of his round he will stop running as there is no incentive anymore and the mail will just be delivered later. Dont ask me to defend them demanding overtime to clear the backlog brought on by them striking though - thats a bit harder
The cornish ones are moaning about the use of carrot inside them. The cheese & onion ones are complaining that they're nowhere near as nice when served cold.
Like Benn stated P.O. is not a business but a Public Service If it was a business then more Post Offices would close because they are losing money hand over fist. The postal deliveries would not be made to out of the way villages and other unprofitable places and you would not have in a lot of cases a contact for isolated old people. Let TNT get the monopoly and a first class letter would cost above £1 from the start and double within a few weeks. So why not pay more for the post now rather than later.
RE: Like Benn stated P.O. is not a business but a Public Service Let TNT get what monopoly? The problems started when the various sections of Royal Mail were opened up for other companies to compete for, of course companies such as TNT would cream off the profitable bits and not be interested in the standard mail, leaving Royal Mail to pick up that but find it difficult to subsidise it with the business arm of the company as they had been able to do in the past.
the press dont tell you half of it.... yeah, its job n done, some have cushy walks, some hard, thats how the cookie crumbles, what they dont tell you is that we rarely take our breaks, so most take it at the end of the shift, most get done early because they illegally use their own cars, have the media told you that if a workmate rings in sick 5 minutes before the shift starts those working around have to share the walk and maybe post it for nowt! that can also apply to holidays, start times can vary by 2 hours, so 1 week you can easily be home to pick the brats up from school, the next, they can be waiting at the gates, pensions? they naffed that up and want to increase it by 5 years, so no, im not whining, would like to see adam crozier walking round with a great big sack on his back and listen to people moaning why he's late!
RE: the press dont tell you half of it.... Is having help deliver someone else just another crumbling of the cookie. So you are saying that if by helping to deliver someone elses round and you run over your hours for the day then you dont get paid overtime?</p> Its the nature of the modern way of work in that you have to be "flexible"</p>
Korky I worked from Barnsley for 4 years, then Wombwell 2 years. When at Barnsley I became a senior postie, the best round was Stainbro and surrounding in the van, Mrs Allen allways had a full breakfast for me at 8am, then off round to the farm for toast and marmalade, bloody great it was, wish I could bring them times back
For "flexible" read: ready to be shafted by your employer at a moments notice.</p> You can hear the cries of derision, "We all get fecked on so why shouldnt you!?"</p> </p> </p> </p>
RE: the press dont tell you half of it.... well yep, they want us to be "honest" in our finish times....yeah right its common to be 90 mins difference on a tuesday and a friday, whilst id say its fair as an employer to pay actual o/t over the whole week instead of day by day, try doing an hours o/t knowing you aint gonna get paid it! and when they bring in the extra junk mail in, they'll be no easy days.
RE: Korky most ive ever got was a mars bar n a cuppa! mind....ive copped a few fried eggs and the odd "bun" if you know what i mean
Thats the nature of the beat I am afraid. If you are not prepared to get turned over now and again. Go and st up a business of your own.
