that was one hell of a scarey night

stood on the west stand lower terrace (ponty side). Tannoykept telling people to move towards the half way line to allow more people to get in, but there were was nowhere to go because it was packed. Stood with my dad, ducked down to try to pick something up and couldn't back up,by the time I managed to surface I was 20 twenty yards away and couldn't get back.

Mate of mine took a mars bar in his coat pocket but he was that squashed in he couldn't get his hand down to get it out, when he came out of the ground it was a foot long.

Unless my memory is fading away

I seem to remember 38000 against the Blunts in a cup tie around 1979 ish but maybe I have got that wrong
I know I was jammed into the Brewery stand and could hardly move.

I also remember us setting the then 4th division record of 21000+ the say we got promotion against Grimsby

    (Pompey took that record away)

You do wonder where everyone has gone though

    Man City 33,782

Liverpool 29,639 (due to the scousers not selling all their tickets)

    Everton 32,551

Got to be the Man City one for me.

I can remember the swaying of all the crowd during the Everton game and a certain Mrs Southall.

    The liverpool game was scarier

Would have topped the city crowd had they sold anywhere near their allocation. Onl;y abart 3k from scouse when the kop held 8. I'm not optimistic the count was accurate for either game..not in the favour of the club obviously......atr the time the ground held 38.5k or maybe more and I'll be be fecked if I know how they intended getting any more in the home sections...total sardine city.

    Man City..... League Cup...........

Fan-bloody-tastic it was too! I shall take that occasion to my grave. Unbelievable furore when we scored. The shrieks of whistles close to full time when he seemed to add about 2 hours injury time! Ohhhh!... Honestly! Thank goodness that my yout was brought up in that era!

Incidentally............... what's everyone's lowest crowd? 2,564 against Darlington in the 75/76 season (i admit to looking it up). As an impressionable young un my first game, the season before against Bradford City, drew 7,492 and i thought that was massive for many years at Oakwell.

RE: The liverpool game was scarier

With regards the Liverpool game, i would say the home sections were fuller than for the Man City game in the previous round. A lot of interest in the club circulated around town at the time and it was wonderful, and there were definitely hundreds (at least) that got in for free the night of the Liverpool game. Even the police were helping supporters over the walls on the odd occasion - there were even fans sat on the tiles of the refreshment bar on the North Terrace/ Spion Kop corner.

I seem to recall that Liverpool only sold around 3,000 tickets for the match on account of them anticipating revenge attacks for what unfurled at Anfield, and the club did consider segregating the Spion Kop but the police advised against it.

    Same for me

I agree about comments of the Liverpool game - for the Man City game we got in our usual position in the Ponty, just to the right of the goal (looking from the stand) about halfway up, for the Liverpool game I got in at the side and couldn't move over much further.
