What is the definition of a 'lower league' player?

Is Luke Steele lower league? He started out at Peterborough who I would consider a lower league club. But then he has been employed by Man Utd and WBA, as well as ourselves for 5 years.

Bobby Hassell? Started out at Mansfield. But in his tenth season here. Is he lower league?

What about Chris O'Grady? Was a Leicester product. But has then spent most of his career in the lower leagues.

Paddy McCourt. Taking away his spell at Celtic, he's only played for Rochdale and some Irish clubs. Lower league?

Jacob Mellis? Started out at the Blunts. Never played a game. Played once for Chelsea in the Champions League. Spent time on loan at (at the time) lower league Southampton.

From what I can gather, the vitriol aimed at 'our' lower league players is usually aimed at Wiseman (started out at Hull), Kennedy (has played for Leicester), Etuhu (Man City product), Dagnall and Perkins.
The latter two, would in my opinion certainly be deemed 'lower league' players, as they've spent the vast majority of their careers there. So that would be my definition. Am I right?

For the record, I don't buy the theory that 'lower league' players are the root cause of our troubles. We've currently got a Norwegian international on loan, a Premier League centre half on loan and a bloke who started out at Paris Saint Germain in defence. They're three of the players I would gladly wave goodbye to tomorrow. And for all the stick Keith Hill gets for signing 'lower league' players, I would suggest it was his 'upper league' players that let him down, loanees especially. But when the budget you're given can only get you 'lower league' players and Premier League cast-offs, what's a man to do?

In my opinion, the only label our players (collectively) need right now is 'poor'. No doubt we've got some good players individually, and I'm still of the belief that moulded together in a favourable system they could still shine again as a 'team', a collective. But despite the huge recruitment policy of one David Flitcroft, we are still desperately short in a few key positions. Let us hope Danny Wilson can fill them, and fast.

Ok doesn't matter if they were upper or lower league players, a lot of them are just *****. Does that clarify it.

    Yes.

So can we stop with the "lower league *****" remarks?

    Just "*****" will do. :)

If you have played the majority of your career in the lower leagues then you're a lower league player. Like David Perkins or Matt Done.

There is nothing wrong with recruiting from lower down the pyramid whether that is League 1 or 2 or non league. What you have to do is carefully analyse performances to see if that player is capable of making the step up and offering them support and development if you sign them. What doesn't work is a scattergun approach of signing players you have known from your days lower in the pyramid in the hope that an occasional one will be able to make the transition. Basically you sign a team of Rochdale players you end up with Rochdale's team.

You see this is the problem i think Whitey has alluded to in a way. People are fed up of him mentioning Hill etc, but in nearly every single thread you post about Perkins.
Give it a rest, we get it, you don't like him.

Good question and probably, no one single correct answer?

I'd go with if you've played the majority of your career games (> 50%) in League 1 / 2, then I'd say you are classed as a lower league player.

Any player who's majority of performances are ineffective in the championship weather they play well or not...

These lower league players who are grafters, the likes of Perkins & Dawson etc, looked brilliant when we had Vaz Te, Drinkwater, Stones and Butterfield in the team with them, without them they have to become the stars and not the grafters, it just can't work!!!

If someone starts a thread specifically about him am I allowed to post and mention him in that?

That's the frustration.....last season Perkins was "OK", didn't deserve POTY in my opinion, but I never vote anyway.

This season he has been shocking, and for me, a manager should know when to take a player out of the team and strengthen. Flicker didn't do it and at the minute, DW does not appear to have made his mind up yet.

Could say that for a few more players, so he's not on his own.
