For me it was an NSU Ro80. Bought it second hand (2 years old) but had to change the engine for an Audi 100 + Auto gearbox etc after a further 18 months. It ran for a further 180,000 miles with no trouble at all. Way ahead of its time in many respects.
Current one Peugeot 406 3.0V6 had it from 18 months old and 21 000 miles today its nearly 10 and has done over 170K miles no significant unexpected costs either
I still miss mine It was a British Motor Racing green Triumph Dollomite and I loved it! The bloody gear stick knob used to come off and smack me in the gob ( yeh, yeh, I can imagine the 'knob in gob' quips) everytime I put it into reverse. Still, I wish I'd never sold it!
The one I drive now... Scoda Octavia 1.9 tdi well inpressed . had it 8 month n 20000 mile. company car hehehe had a mark 3 golf which was first car i owned n that was preety good too.
Range Rover
in Africa for 10 years. Was used mainly off road and it was absolutely amazing. Knock spots off everything bar the Landrover.
Dirt tracks, rivers, mud tracks, hills you could throw anything at it and it would cope. once towed a lorry out of a gully by the side of the road. wasn't till he was out that I realised he hadn't even switched his lorry on

I've had.. Vauxhall Viva..so crap I was pulled by the coppers for owning the shabbiest car in South Yorks.. 1/10 Ford Cortina Mk4 2.0 GL with twin webbers and 8 spot lights. Fast as **** in a straight line but those corners.... 4/10 Triumph Acclaim..hand me down from mi fatha...hmm 3/10 Metro..hmm 2/10 Volvo 340...heavy, robust and ultimately crap..3/10 Peugeot 205 1.8D..feckin marvelous..light, fast, reliable and 60+ mpg..pity some tw@t ran into the back of it at 60mph. Got 1.5x what I paid for it in insurance but not able to replace...6/10 Citroen ZX 1.8D...sack of cack..well not too bad just not as good as the 205...4/10 Audi A4 2.6 V6 fast reliable and comfortable. Converted to run on LPG so get abart 60 to the gal (equiv) had it for almost 6 years and its never let me down. getting a bit tired now and needing a bit spent but I still like it....7/10
Bought a Seat Ibiza once for £1100.
Not a good car as engine blew up.
Somehow managed to part ex it for £1800 6 months after purchase.
Current car prob best... Lexus IS200.

Fiat 126. 650cc monster engine. The windows don't go up or down. Body panels in 3 different colours - the o/s wing is made out of papier mache. The seats are beer crates. It's a right bit of kit.
Hilman Imp In pale blue with the full 1000cc engine and 4 speed box. Wind down windows and 2 windscreen wipers. Room in the boot for a teaspoon. Cruised easily at 26 mph downhill.
Mondeo ST200 was nippy but Honda's for me now... Accord Sport which is great and just got the new shape CRV, 2.2 Turbo Diesel which is quality motorway cruising
RE: Fiat 126. Once went on holiday in a Fiat 126. Just finished our A level so me and 3 mates went to Scarborough for a week of mayhem. How do you get 4 big blokes in a Fiat 126 - 2 in the back, 2 in the front and then pack around them, we could not move.
Kinell fire. Richard Kell, with 2 broken legs, can run faster than a Fiat 126. "What have you packed?" "Just what I'm wearing - I had to put my toothbrush on the roofrack" In my younger & more ridiculous days - a bunch of us once put a Fiat 126 in a skip. I'm quite shamed by this now. I've seen the error of my ways. We should have put the skip in the Fiat 126.
Are we supposed to be impressed. So, you put a 126 in a skip, christ, I've got 2 in my pockets and an erection. When I say we went to Scabby for a week, what I meant to say was it took us a week to get to Scabby. Pushing.
