I've been thinking how hard it is for kids to pick what they want to do when they leave school? And what the realistic opportunities are available to them? So the question is what did you want to be and where did you actually end up? No need to do a middle bit. My first taste of work was a part time job at 13 doing a paper round for chapmans news agents on Agnes road, loved it!. I had the round that covered Albion and Buckley House tower blocks, Park Grove and park road. I wanted to be either a policeman or a footballer, but seeing as I knew who most of the wrong uns were in the town centre and I was blessed with Bobby Charltons hair and not skill.... my career took me elsewhere. My first job was as a business apprenticeship at the Tank Exchange in Dodworth after they had a bit of fame selling solar powered level pools on gardeners world. Only problem was, they were taking people's money but couldn't get them the gear. It wasn't long until they were declared bankrupt and owed me a month's wages (55.00 quid a week). I'm now a planning manager for what used to be known as Keepmoat, I deal with all the Rotherham council house repairs and maintenance in our part of the Borough.
First job primary school teacher Current job : Educational consultant- still teaching primary children but specialise in computing
How's the education system changed, for better or worse since you first started? I'm guessing it's a different animal now?
Also had a paper round when I was a kid and glass collecting at draycotts. Always wanted to join the navy which I did eventually. Started of on a YTS doing plastering, didn't enjoy so joined the navy. Now deliver and collect cars for a living, not the most glamorous of jobs and not the best paid but I actually enjoy it . No stress and a 10 minute drive from my house
Definitely changed- children have far more complex needs than when I first started 32 years ago. Seeing a lot of challenging behaviour as well. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy it buy completely different ball game now.
First job on leaving school was working in the Slaughter house at Barnsley Abattoir across from Oakwell. I’m now a retired Civil Servant. In between those 2 jobs I was A Miner, University graduate,, and worked in a Call Centre and Tescos
My first jobs were part time in retail and I got to be a store manager before all the shops were sold, and then I did an electrical apprenticeship. I’m a contracts manager now, but sick to death of where I work and looking for opportunities. Job interview tomorrow!
Wow great question, Really should’ve made more of my degree, but things in my life changed dramatically during my studies and I became a family man. perhaps, if I had more confidence in myself when I started out in the pits I could’ve taken up an available course to climb the ladder.
First proper job i had was just over 20 years ago working in intelligence for the police... for the past 11 or so years I've worked in mental health (RMN) and currently work in higher education.
Life can throw some curve balls and hindsight and experience can make us look back and wonder what might have been or if only?
Is working in police intelligence as exciting and interesting as it sounds or is it more mundane and a lot of time and hard graft for limited results? It's something that I'm interested in, you see all these documentaries about county lines and drugs gangs and all the intelligence and information gathering that goes off in the background to put a case together is phenomenal.
First job: (temp in the summer while at Uni): sports shop assistant First 'proper' job: Graduate trainee for Stagecoach buses. Current job: Managing Director of a software firm. All 3 basically by accident and unrelated to my degree (Chemistry)
Yeah it could be quite interesting. I used to like working on operations and putting profiles together, family trees etc and doing digging on what cars/phones etc...i worked in counter terrorism for a few years too and was privy to quite a lot of stuff. just didn't like the mentality of a lot of the officers I worked with. As a civilian got looked down on a lot and had an air of superiority about them. Wasn't for me and made me ill, hence the shift to my new career
Yeah, ‘Twas ever thus. On that note but a separate subject, Wife and I always look back at the house prices and think why didn’t we initially get a bigger mortgage and a better house
Yeah that's something I've come across too that even when you are working alongside the police their superiority complex kicks in to over drive.... maybe they are all secretly wednesday fans? You don't see a similar attitude from the lads and lasses that have been in the forces, they are mostly humble and sound based on personal experiences.
