surely it's the fault of the FA and Premier League rather than the individual clubs

I agree Fitzytyke. There is something of a 'don't you just hate Man U' culture amongst a lot of fans nationally- and to be honest, I have never understood why? Jealous of their success? Bitter that they can attract support worldwide? If so, neither are real reasons for 'hating' another team so much.

Me thinks the answer is bandwagon jumping.

The reason they are hated so much is because they are more like brand than a football club. Personally I don't envy all the Man U 'fans' you see walking around every town and city in this country, I pity them. It's sad that so many people have no roots and sense of belonging to their own hometown clubs.
Unfortunately Barnsley as a town is one of the worst affected.
I definitely enjoy it when they lose and even more so when they win nothing.

I can't see that argument holding much water really. The Premeriship is also a commercial brand that generates millions in revenue for the clubs involved. Man U may have 'sold out' commercially as a brand, but equally, some might say this was only when the Prem came into being - and to try and ensure they remained in the top 6 clubs in the country they have done it to gain a 'commercial' edge.

Put it this way, if Barnsley went down a similiar route (I know - a very long shot!) would you stop supporting Barnsley in favour of a non commercialised club? Or if an Abramovich came along and pumped a **** load of money into the club would you also deem that financially unacceptable?

Fooball is not played on a level playing field anymore (although to be fair it never has been) and it's something we have to live with. That said, at least you gave a reasoned argument. I still reckon there is a number of people hate Man U purely because it's fashionable to do so.

No I would not stop supporting Barnsley in the unlikely event of them going the same way as Man U commercially. But that's because I'm FROM Barnsley and they are MY team.
The point I was trying to make is that people just identify themselves with Man U cos they are winners even though they have no connection with the city of Manchester. That is what I find sad.

    Yesterday was a good day

Barnsley won and played very well to boot. It lifted the mood no end to take into Saturday night out. Man Utd losing barely even registers.

    Couldn't agree more !!!!

I watch MOTD and enjoy some of the quality on display. If I was pushed I'd like to see Arsenal win it, but I'm not that fussed, Man Utd loseing means next to nowt to me in the Premier/global/soon to be intergalactic/money/greed league. Now yesterday I saw my team take on the top of the league, beat them fair and square and both teams played a decent quality of football, allbeit WBA only in the second half. Now that made me happy !!!!

Fair enough and it sticks in my throat too twhen I see and hear these glory seeking fans. But it's not just Man U who have glory seeking fans wih no connection to Manchester. Just add to the list Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham, Everton, Liverpool etc etc who can all draw support nationally (and even internationally in some cases). They don't seem to be universally hated to the same extent, which brings me back to people's jealousness of Man Us success as being the main reason of this hatred.

    Harsh

Got no problems with Man U.

As a club I think they've been a lot more help to us than most others. And who would want to celebrate anything for Man City? Certainly not moi!

    A very pleasing result.

Also interesting to see a couple of closet scummers peeping round the door. Don't know why they just don't come out with it.
