Good to hear he's still about. He was a nice fella, always helpful and accommodating and ran the shop ( when it was just a hole in the wall ) very well.
Me too. it was michael spinks years ago in the 80s that didnt want an official Barnsley FC suporters club.
Well I'm sure in his years of working for BFC he can't have pleased everyone, but I can tell you, that he has BFC running through his veins. I worked at the club for a short time, and I can tell you he totally ran the show, and he wasn't the type to clock off at 5pm. He absolutely loves our club, and still goes to all the home games, (and have seen him at plenty of away games too). Really committed fella, I always say hello to him when I see him.
I always liked him, always took the time to speak. From that era Chris Patzelt was also a great asset to the club
That's not how I remember him, cos I thought he was member of the supporters club along with myself and many others. (That's when he worked for the Chronicle.) I have always found him to be amiable and respectful but don't get me wrong, we don't always agree.
As someone who worked with him in the office every home match day for 2 years, I can tell u that 95% of the time there was no problem. But if you know better...
He was actually the secretary of the supporters club before he started working at the club and they were official enough for him to regularly write a piece in the programme. He never really had a good reputation for friendliness, but I found this to be unfair, because on the few occasions when I have spoken to him I have always found him to be pleasant and a commited Reds fan.
Every Friday after school me and 4 mates went down to oakwell to the shop, Michael Spinks always had time for us and chatted away about the club. As we got older we always stopped and had a natter with him on match days, even gave a steward a rollicking for trying to throw us out the East stand during the cup game against Villa in the 90's and let us sit with him in the director's box. Nothing but fond memories of MS
He told me outside box office that the promotion parade in 97 had been cancelled due to the rain so I went home. Can't believe he said that and I missed it
That's where I first remember him..running the away buses from the social club....nice bloke, always accommodation..
