    Following the Reds/Tykes thread -- a question.
Do you have to be Barnsley born or Yorkshire born to be a Tyke?

Or is it alright to have Yorkshire parents? Will Yorkshire residency do?

Cos if not where does it leave those of us not born and bred in God's own county.

I'd say that if your parents are tykes, then you're a tyke - as long as you show allegiance to the white rose and shout "Yorkshire, Yorkshire" at the first sign of any trouble.
I think it's the same rules that apply to playing football for Scotland, Wales or Ireland.

It's got loads of meanings, only one of which has anything to do with Yorkshire.

A tyke is: a child (particularly a boy); a mischievous child (affectionate); a person from Yorkshire; an offensive term for a person from Yorkshire; a catholic (offensive, Australian); an uncouth, mean, rough, ill-mannered man; a mongrel dog; a nickname for Barnsley football club; a nickname for Leeds Carnegie rugby union club; the name for entry level sports in Canada (Tyke Hockey). Tyke is also the name of the little bulldog in the Tom and Jerry cartoons, a female circus elephant that, in 1994, ran amok in the streets of Honolulu killing its trainer and taking 86 shots to bring down, a homing pigeon that won the Dickin Medal for gallantry in 1943, and, according to Marc Bolan, something that needs to Truck On.

No, parents from Poland and Scotland and they now live in Scotland. I've lived in Barnsley, man and boy for 20+ years - can I call myself a Tyke? And what of my youngsters born in Scotland?

More people will know what a Tyke is rather than a collier.........especially among the young uns
And who the hell wants to be looking backwards..........we need progressive answers to move Barnsley football club forward - not owd twaddle

We are Yorkshire and we are Tykes.........the proudest county in the country

If a marketing person (Ben Mansford?) cannot make something out of that, then they shouldn't be doing the job
We need to do a Cardiff.........they stole the Welsh flag..........we need to steal the Yorkshire flag
