With Beckham landing a £500,000 a week contract how long will the Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney Ranaldo, keep playing for peanuts in the premiership ?

Just like the 70's and 80's with Pele, Best, etc

Old has been's will go and a few journeymen, but serious players in the peak of their career will stay where the real football is played.

Beckham has a longer term agenda. His football career is in it's autumn, he's working on Beckham plc

Only 1 per team can be earning that sort of money - there is a salary cap.

Much of this money will be coming from sponsors as well - it's probably no coincidence that Backham has commercial contracts with Adidas, whilst Adidas are one of the major sponsors of MLS.

The difference with Beckham to Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard etc is that Beckham is already well known in the US and that's outside the sport so they see him as a player that can get the sport the publicity they seek.

Interesting looking at some of the US media site, it was front page story on the NY Times website
    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/11/s...&en=831e7136b42c6868&ei=5094&partner=homepage

And major story for the LA Times
