I've always known the purple skinned, orange/yellow vegetable as a turnip, but down here they call it a sweed. I also thought the white skinned, pale yellow vegetable was a sweed. However, that down here is a turnip.

    I'm confused. Is it a northern/southern divide, or am I losing it?:S

Isn't it a 'swede?' (As in, someone from Sweden, but not capitalised?)

I seem to remember a resurrection of the 'Turnip [Graham] Taylor' running joke in The Sun. They turned Sven Goran Eriksson into 'The Swede.'
