Not been in The Gate of India recently

But it's been good when I've been there. Never seen it particularly full though, unlike Dil Raj.

    I don't rate it mate.

Much prefer Bollywood in Wakefield, where we went on Saturday night. The service is very good, the surroundings are very nice and the food is excellent.

Red Chilli in Wakefield is pretty good too, although I've heard they've had a bit of a slapping from the health and safety inspectors of late.

Gate of India is great, especially if....

The Gate of India is great if you like: -

Eating your meal to the sound of a hoover cleaning the carpet in other parts of the restaurant

Having your plate taken away while you are still eating from it

Cold starters which are supposed to be hot

Main courses served to others on your table while you are still eating your starter

Being asked if you can move temporarily, while eating, so they can hoover under your chair

Receiving an angry "who do you think you are?" stare when asking if a taxi can be ordered

    I've only been once.

    Bag O'***** that India.

The meat is rancid. They just cover it in every spice known to man and hope you won't notice.

Suck the red/orange/brown stuff off, and see what colour the meat is underneath. Go on, I dare you.

    We arrived at about 10pm

They obviously wanted out money but didn't want to be in bed too late.

They tried their very best to get us in and out quickly, hence the hasty removal of plates etc. They then started to clean up at 10.30, hence the hoovering noises.

I can't remember what the actual advertised closing time is but they were starting to shut up shop well before the advertised time. Needless to say we were the only party in there - it was a Saturday night too.

Everybody knows I prefer the Dil Raj but rather than try to justify it I simply say there must be a reason why it is heaving at a time when others in the vicinity are half empty. Having said that I think has become a bit pricey recently, over-pricey in my opinion.

    Oh, wow.

I've completely got the wrong one. I'm thinking of 'Spice of India'.

    Apologies.

    Yep, that's the one

I'm sure it was untypical as I've heard other reports saying it was OK. I did find it strange that it was empty at 10pm on a Saturday night rather than packed like others.

As I said the Dil Raj is pricey but if I go anywhere else (except the Curry Mahal) I've got a taxi fare, so there you go.

    RE: Yep, that's the one

one problem they have is it's not on a well trodden route-there's very little passing walk in trade

    Cant rate Bollywood highly enough

As you say its a stones throw from all the decent real ale pubs at the bottom of Westgate as well. Reasonably priced for such a well turned out place as well.
