One of the beauties of Russia is that things just aren't quite the same as they are in the UK. You can't always put your finger on it but things here are just, well...... different. Usually, this is one of the charms of the place. However, as I walked into the metro station on Nevsky Prospect this morning, I could see a small mound ahead of me, with a briefcase lying on top of it. As I approached the mound, I could see that it was a white cloth that was secured on top of something using the briefcase as a weight. Imagine my surprise when I saw motionless two feet poking out from underneath the said cloth. Yep, there was a stiff lying in the underpass completely unattended, his luggage used to secure his makeshift shroud! This was only about an hour ago, so I'm wondering if the poor sod is still there, or whether anyone has actually come to dispose of him yet. I doubt it's too pressing, as it's well below freezing here now. Had it been summer, the problem would be more urgent of course. Even more strange, was the fact that no-one else seemed the least bit perturbed by it, so maybe leaving corpses unattended for several hours in public places is common here. As with a lot of things in this country, I'd say it's best not to ask......
My neighbour has just brought back his Russian bride. Well, actually it was about a month ago. He was telling me how tobacco & booze was really cheap out there.
I remember running along Leningrad station past a guy who collapsed on the edge of a platform, we grabbed him and rolled him back onto the platform before he went under a train. He had a suit, tie, briefcase and a vodka bottle up his sleeve. We just made sure he couldn't fall under a train and then legged it to catch our train, nobody else seemed to take much notice.

RE: I remember running along Leningrad station past a guy Typical Russian incident, nothing out of the ordinary! Leningrad station, how long ago was that then?
Long time ago 1980. When the only Russians walking around with guns were the soldiers. Mind you they weren't averse to pointing them at you!
