Haven't traded one for many a year (always gone main dealer route) but have a private one to sell for my family.

My business partner had someone drive off in his on a test drive, heard about other people where the money was dodgy.

Not too fussed about top price, just being legal/safe.

    Any advice welcome!

    we want any car.com

Office at Rotherham - offered me a grand above what other trade in firms did - I've eventually traded thro a main dealer who offered more than them - but they did say they'd match it,

If from home you go with the guy on a test drive. Have him pay with a building society cheque which is safe, or cash. Do not let him have car or log book until money is cleared

If selling privately, make sure you go on the test drive with them (even better if 2 of you can go). Insist on a bank draft for payment - and phone the bank to make sure the draft is legit before you release the vehicle. A bank draft is treated as cleared funds and it also ensures you are not accepting either fake notes or money-laundered cash.

He went with him mate, looked perfectly plausible, asked all the right questions, then drove off when they were supposed to be swapping over seats!

I've heard that firms like webuyanycar.com etc lower their price after an on site appraisal.

And then put a massive "admin fee" on top. Rip off merchants.
