Many will remember when Match of the Day just had football, not chat.

Just fail to see the point of paying ex-pros ridiculous fees.

Probably started with Cloughie, early 70s...Brilliant at the time, seldom repeated.

O'Neil, Strachan and our own Macca have been good value. Flip side...Townsend, Pleat, Carragher, etc, etc...Oh dear.

Totally agree, it really annoys me when there are several ex pros telling me what I already knew and getting paid fortunes for doing it. It used to be Jimmy Hill or Bob Willis and that was enough. From time to time they'd get an 'expert' on such as Cloughie but it wasn't to the ridiculous extent it is these days. I reckon it started to go to today's levels around the early 90's just as Sky started their killing of the game.

They'd fit more highlights into MOTD if they did away with the waffle. Just have Lineker to introduce the action.

But they are only allowed a certain number of minutes of action I think that's why they always show the teams coming out and have all the waffle otherwise Match of The Day would be a 30 minute program Same with the footy league show

Not that a shorter but action packed program would be a bad thing

Bob Willis the guy that used to keep goal for Arsenal. Or was it Bob Wilson the renowned fast bowler?

Probably when Sky only allowed Match of the Day to show a certain number of minutes of each game.
Without the waffle, the show would be over in 20 mins.

Ruud Gullit, Phil Neville and Rio Ferdinand the lastest line up for Match of the Day. Adding to Alan Shearer, Danny Murphy and Robbie Savage. Jeez.

But prior to that you only got highlights of 2 or 3 games.
