Growing up as a Reds fan relegation from the second tier was something that we never really considered and every season began with the hope that this year we could do something. Quite often we did - just missing out on the play offs three times, promoted once and being in the play off final. We are a smallish club now and we were a smallish club then - but we were ambitious. We are not privileged or punching above our weight being in the second tier - we were failing when we were playing below it. If Hull and Stoke can get in the Premier League and Preston and Burnley can get in the play offs there is no reason why we cannot aim for those heights. And let's not hear any B*ll*cks about them being bigger clubs than us - because they're not. Let's just stop seeing survival in this division as success - because it isn't
Growing up as a reds fan was always hovering near the bottom of this league - unless you want to go further back, in which case it was the old fourth division, and quite often near the bottom of that.
How on earth can we be ambitious? With Davey as manager? I'm sick and tired of all these fans wanting to give him a chance, They've been saying the same all season. We've been lucky this season not to go down, now fans want to ride luck again next season. They must be either thick or they like pain!
How have we been lucky? I believe you finish were you deserve to over a season so I contradict myself by considering things such as losing our star player for the rest of the season at an early stage and a few dodgy late goal decision at the end of the season. We deserved to stay up
What era are you referring to? Which era places us further than we are right now? Apart from the once in a hundred years promotion season, the Basset play off season, and the Glavin etc couple of years?
Since then lots of teams have been developed (reading, fulham, wigan etc) with millions and rich chairman who were nothing in those days whilst we have more or less stayed the same size. For our size, town population and finances we are proudly overachieving in the position we finished, sadly.
You said "Growing up as a reds fan was always hovering near the bottom of this league" - when was this?
Toby, WTF are you talking about? From the early 80's to the year we got promoted (1997) we were always in the championship or the second division as it was then. You have to go back to the mid 70's to find us in the old forth division. I am nearly 40 and as far as I am concenred we are under performing if we're not in the championship. How old are you; 74?
What on earth has that got to do with all this I've seen 3 matches plus 2 on Sky this season, start of the season, christmas and easter. The shocking thing is, i didn't see any differance in the performances. Sorry, i'm telling fibs. The performances got worse, at easter the team looked confused and uncommitted. That tells me that the manager has done a bad job. Dave, bollax
100% spot on. Its something thats been very evident this year amongst the fans. Not sure why? We just need to look around us. There's half a dozen prem league teams no bigger than us.
MARTYN !!!! (neer)
oh I can't be bothered !!!
We stayed up and I'm geting....ahem 'relaxed' so I don't care !!
Hope you are well mate
Dave

I think that, for the next few days, everyone will just be pleased to have stayed up. People aren't satisfied with scraping through for the third year in a row. There's a difference between lack of ambition and relief.
