I think you mean when Johnson was at oldham. But if he was a head coach there aswell that's probley right on a whole a head coaches role is just to coach the players he has. And has very little say if any in recruitment.

I think what he said was it would be upto the club if they wanted a player like that there but he'd be open to it or something along those lines.

Yes he did say the decision was out of his hands but as I recall he also hinted that he wouldn't have to play him.
