The crowds were less. The atmosphere was better. Barnsley as a club has always been a bit of an under dog club regardless of how well it performs on the pitch. The playing budget would also have been similar as it is today ... Not a lot. Yet forward on 20 years and the arrogance is astounding. It is honestly starting to turn into S6 on here demanding that e club seek mega investment to buy established championship players in order to cement our position in the league an push on and the players signed from lower leagues marked as ***** before a balls kicked. As much as I want Barnsley to make bums on seat signings I am also very much a realist knowing that you can't do your shopping at marks if you only have the money for aldi. You just make the best of what you have got and give it a 100% go. If you have any nous about you, it's very possible to turn aldi into fine dining. It's understandable there are a number of issues that will be affecting support the cost for example being the prime bug bear but to an extent that's out of the clubs control. They need to influx of tickets to help cover the out of control player wages but that's by the by. It's about time that we reverted back to type. Insular northerners with a gritty dislike of anyone who drinks lemonade tops. Time we rolled up our sleeves and said **** it those are our boys on the pitch and got behind them standing firm for ninety minutes. Football might not be spectacular nor the results at times but it a few seasons apart never has been. But we are together as one. The Barnsley united will never be defeated.
Yes thats ok........but .........it would be nice if we could NEARLY compete with wages Not so much mega bucks.......just better than whats on offer now. Because it would make a huge difference if we did. I'm sure more quality players would want to come to the club. But thats not saying i want huge amounts throwing at the players, I dont, we dont want to go down the same route as McCabe at the Blunts. At the moment i think Keeeflicker are finding it very difficult to attract players to the club - they should be given a bit more room to manouver because I'm sure if they had this.....then these guy would get us up near the top of the division. But more money at the club may mean another owner. And as much as people like and respect what Pat Cryne has done for the club, and I for one would be sorry to see him leave the club, but that might be the only option if Barnsley FC wants to prime the pump
Sensible post To get a better atmosphere, we need the die-hard singers to get together and sing, the rest will join in if they do. As far as I can see the only way to do that is to revert to the unreserved seating in the Ponty which we had when it first opened. Or better still go back to standing, but that isn't going to happen any time soon.
Re: Sensible post So what did you do when it was standing in the Ponte ?.......it would encourage those that want a specific seat to either go in the East or West or get there earlier and if theres more in your group going to a particular match you can all sit together
Re: Sensible post I agree with this. In the promotion season I remember most games being unreserved and we made a good noise back then. If you want a reserved seat sit in the East Stand!
Re: Sensible post I tend to agree in that I have a good set of fans sat around me and its been the same faces for years so I wouldnt want to lose the reserve seats and just take pot luck each week.
Why not? Unless the Ponty is full - once in a blue moon - you can sit wherever you want. As a supporter that's lived away from Barnsley since I was 18, I've never had a season ticket so its not problem to me but I understand your concern. You surely have to agree that it would give you the opportunity to move away from the occasional nobhead who happens to have a season ticket immediately next to you? Win-win situation as far as I can see.
But we were all standing in the Ponte or Brewery stand - when I first started watching 40 years ago we were in the old 3rd division and soon in the 4th - I dont remember the atmosphere being great in the mid 70's though it was better than it is now There was a step change the first game Allan Clarke was in charge - gate increased from around 6000 to 10000 in an instant and the atmosphere was completely different Difficult to get a solution though without standing coming back
Good points Farnham. When I first started to watch we were stood in the West stand and there was a better atmosphere than there is now. Furthermore I find the better atmospheres away are at grounds where you can stand up - Peterborough being the obvious example this season.
Re: Sensible post The Ponty end was unreserved for all games as far as I remember, I really don't know why they changed it - makes no sense to me at all. You'd only need reserved seats for a sell-out - which can only have happened once or twice in the last 15 years (Chelsea in the cup? Hudderfield in the Playoffs?). So the club could print seat numbers on the tickets as they do now, but have a note to say something like "Unreserved Seating Unless Advised Otherwise" so that if tickets were sold in droves they could revert to reserved. This could also be augmented by the scoreboard displaying a suitable message up to kick-off and by PA system announcements. Not difficult is it?
Re: Sensible post They'd need some new bulbs first; its hard enough reading the scores without them using it as an announcement service. And the less said about the PA system the better
Peterborough was an exceptional case though as well due to the game being absolutely brilliant Away games are different as you tend to get the more enthusiastic supporters and we are concentrated into a quite small area also usually unreserved seating - though it wasnt at Leicester but didnt seem to be a problem Some clubs seem to manage a decent atmosphere is all seater stadiums though Southamptons home fans were decidely quiet until they scored
Re: Sensible post You can buy unreserved season tickets for the stand behind the goal at Millwall, so why not Barnsley?
