Yes, i lived in Birdwell,i was due back from leave ,i caught the last bus to Sheffield, then walked to Midland st station,BUT, it belted it down with rain, there was no way i could shelter, arrivin at the station i was drenched,no way could i go back like that,i was stuck,no buses back to barnsley, how was going to get back to Birdwell,as it happened a truck was goping past the station,i thumbed a lift,he was happy to drop me off at Birdwell he was going to Barnsley,i arrived home home still wet thro, went to bed ,and next day after drying out and ironing my uniform set off back to Andover
i made it this time and arrived back at camp, and made mt way to the office, stood at the door was the SGT major,
he did not know who i was ,,as itwas a transit camp,(where soldiers gathered to go abroaad,) what can i do for you he said, fortunatley he was a nice sggt major,
looking at the Board ,was my name with AWOL on it,i said you Can rub that off for a start,i said ,then he sais you are on a chrge ,be at the office at9 am
so i goes in front of the Major,i got 3 dau CB,no problem,
nice duties in the cook house, one job i got was take a message to the other side of the camp.
so ,off i went ,there was a Byke stood outside the office,
so i jumped on it,making the job easier
had a chat with some pals ,and generally took my time
on arriving back at the office, there stood at the door was the Sgt Major
non too happy, i had took his BYKE
you can think of owt he called me
    you will be right
