milk last - pour watter on first and stir to make sure coffee's dissolved. Then add milk an' stir again.
Stops yer gettin' floaty bits.

I find putting milk in the Coffee maker gets a bit messy Run the hot water through the filter and coffee first then pour into cup and add milk for me
If you're refering to instant milk first Stops the coffee tasting so bitter. Tea the other way round. Water needs to be as hot as possible to properly mash the tea bag.
if you pour milk into hot liquid it burns it and gives you a soury off taste - sghould always add hot water to milk so it warms up gently. Its a similar thing to pouring battery acid into water and how the volumes involved affect their reaction. Do it the wrong way and it reacts violently. Pouring water into acid creates a violent reaction that often results in splashing of the acid and should be avoided. Remember the mnemonic device: AAA = Always Add Acid
You add acid to your tea? Funnily enough, I've used that argument to justify putting the milk in first (er, because I have to justify it often), plus the one about not scalding the coffee. Probably doesn't make any difference in reality as you hardly add the hot water slowly do you. The reason I add milk first is because then this lazy bugger doesn't have to stir it in! My mum always adds boiling water to coffee. How many times have I told her? Plenty. I boil the kettle, leave it to stand and cool slightly and she knocks the kettle back on. Mothers.
