He played a simple well organised 4-4-2 with square pegs in square holes and after a slight hiccup we went on a fabulous run. The current bloke took over, started to mess with that, over complicated things and we have been patchy at best ever since. Im not advocating change of manager or anything, but I would like him to look back at that period and work out what brought us that success.
When LJ arrived he specifically said he wouldn't play square pegs in round holes and if I recall correctly he referred to playing a centre half at full back yet this is exactly what he is doing and he's doing it through choice.
Makes you wonder what they learn on these football courses these days. Think football is becoming more and more a sport full of people justifying their own roles by over-complicating something very simple, and that applies to managers, directors, commentators and pundits.
Repeating the same mistakes that wilson, flicker, hill, davey et al made before him. Shitting himself about the opposition evey week, picking a team to counter them, rather than one that goes out and imposes its own style of play on the game. Not dropping favoured players and playing square pegs in round holes as a result. Complex and ever changing formations that division three players struggle to grasp. Buying/loaning players cos they are available rather than ones that fit the type of football you wanna play, leading to daft formations to suit them, or playing square pegs etc. I see folks trying to be positive and grasping of chinks of light here and there, but ultimately we have yet another manager making the same mistakes as all that have gone before him. Football in the third division is a simple game played by simple players, 4-4-2, square pegs, get organised, get some continuity, get some points under your belt.
Remember that huddle we did at corners, brought in by Bunny? That's gone. Shame, thought it was working quite well that last season.
A good keeper a old head at centre half a old head centre forward...equals a strong spine fill the other places with young uns that will run all day...a mentality at the back that says thou shalt not pass....talk....attack is the best line of defence....not rocket science is it.......words of the late brian clough.....shanklys attitude...too...main thing dont over complicate the game keep it simple move forward as a unit.... why re invent the wheel.... Lj talks a good game like a load more.......me included to some no doubt..... i for one just dont know why they dont stick to basics....most game plans doom the team before they even kick off.....Ljs a prime example
Cheers, Gaz. That's positive then. I'd not seen it in the games I'd attended this season, I really liked that last year, worked a treat with Waring profiting more than once.
Have you not been watching this season Whitey? We used it yesterday. Used it at Scunny and Millwall away. They practise it in training still too. Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk
I think you need to read other posts, redarmychris. I wasn't there yesterday, and in the games I have been to, I haven't seen the tactic employed. I didn't go to Scunny, and didn't see it at Millwall. I didn't see it against Burton, Bradford, Everton or Rochdale. So I'd assumed it had been dropped. Gaz pointed out it was used yesterday a couple of times, which pleases me as I felt it was an effective tactic last season when Bunny introduced it. I can't comment on training as I would never go to watch them train as I work during those hours, and were I not working in those hours I could think of a million things I'd rather be doing with that time. *Edit It may have been used against Rochdale from 70 minutes onwards. I won't have seen it though as I wasn't watching the game by that point, I was watching a plant pot. Which would go some way to explaining that I'm the least likely on here to know good or bad tactics. I just have a big gob and busy fingers. I'll add a LOL here. Why not?
You say I need to read other posts. I say that you need to attend games before claiming a tactic is gone when it has in fact been used a number of times this season. Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk
I seem to recall Conor Hourihane being selected to play wide right midfield when we played Crewe at home. It failed so miserably, he was substituted at half time. It hadn't been tried before and it hasn't been tried since.
Meh. Whilst I could well have asked if it was used yesterday, rather than assuming (we all know where that gets you), I'm not going to be too hard on myself because as I say, in all the games I've seen (which is most of them) I hadn't seen it once. Turns out it was used a couple of times yesterday in my absence. And as I say, I hope it's used more often. No interest in arguing with you, I've seen you attempting to do similarly with Django. It's boring and not why I use the forum. Will now be watching the grand prix, so good day to you Sir.
I think he makes a lot of sense, but I definitely don't know owt about football so maybe you're right.
