Spion kop was a battle with the boers in s africa at begining of1900s and some terraces were named in its honour so 1904 sounds a good bet for its name but terrace will probably have been built when we were elected into league and maybe even before.

Spion kop was a hill in S Africa, hence the reason why areas at the back of goal that were a mound were given that name. There was no such thing as an away end in those days. Often in the 60's and 70's we would change ends at half time, going to the opposite end to see our goals go in, hopefully!

I may be wrong but I think the first ground to refer to the away end as Spion Kop was Highbury.

sorry to bring bad news dustani but yes you are wrong arsenal didn't move to highbury till 1913. as a military club they were based at woolwich arsenal south london hence the name. however you could be right that the arsenals old woolwich ground could've had the first spion kop in honour of their brothers in arms. maybe someone will know that.

It's between us and Arsenal apparently but no one seems to have any proof

    Thanks Marlon.
I think the term Spion Kop was given to the Woolwich/Arsenal away end because its humps and bumps reminded some old soldiers of where the battle of Spion Kop was fought.
