I thought it was built before that But I'm probably wrong. There's a number of photos available of the cup winning team, pictured with the trophy, in front of the stand. The likes of Turvey Tyke & Wolves Tyke may have relevant information and access to older photos, to prove one way or another. <img src ="http://prints.colorsport.co.uk/image/barnsley_1912_fa_cup_winners_6442199.jpg">
Re: 1904 I think for the centre section @OakwelHistorian has just confirmed the same mate. Cheers. 110 years of history there. Cracking.
It's always been there. It wasn't a case of Barnsley FC moving to Oakwell and building a stand, the stand was already there and that's why it was such an ideal location. Some say the Romans built it. Others say the Ancient Britons. But there are cave painting in archaeological sites that show it pre-dates either of these civilizations. We'll probably never know the real answer. Recent results from carbon dating suggest it's at least 30,000 years old, although, in a further twist, the bogs pre-date the stand by a further 5,000 years.
So when the question is asked "What have the Romans ever done for us?", the answer, apart from aqueducts, sanitation, hospitals, education, roads etc is also "they built the west stand"
Another question - has anyone ever had a **** in the cubicle? What was your experience? How could it be improved? Please let @WestStandBogs know.
