Three years ago, two products of the Academy (Alistair Taylor & Steven Bennett) were regularly being selected for places on the substitute's bench and making the odd appearance for the first team. However, like many before them, they disappeared into the ether. Has anyone any idea where they are playing now?
Steve Bennett was playing for Athersley Rec a while ago. My parents neighbour plays for them and I saw him giving him a lift one morning with all the training gear on.
When I was 18-20 there were a few reserves of about the same age I knew in passing who were highly thought of but fell into the trap of choosing alcohol and women over their football career, as is always a danger at that age. Whether they would have actually managed to carve out a career I don't know but you can't be off the wagon and a pro footballer these days.
Taylor's on loan to Gainsborough from Alfreton. Bennett had a successful trial with Malmo and is now the subject of a multi million bid by Bayern Munich. ...only one of the above is factual.
Thank you everyone Another player to disappear off the radar is Jamil Adam. When Mark Robins released him the other year, he was criticised to high heaven here on the BBS, as Adam was regarded by some as being the next big thing. Yet Robins was proved to be correct in his assessment. Sadly, it just goes to show potential doesn't always translate into a professional career in the game.
Re: Thank you everyone Looks like Jordan Clarke maybe next..from being headhunted by Man City to being not even in the first team squad. Shame seems we never learn from other peoples mistakes, we thing ourselves bullet proof in our late teens
Seen Bennett out & about a few times & wouldn't be surprised if he is locked up. Not the nicest of lads. Shame about Taylor, remember him winning academy player of the year but he never looked up to it in thee few chances he got
Tyrone Crapper - Handsworth FC (NCEL Div.1) Thomas Harban - Athersley Rec. (NCEL Prem.) Nathan Jarman - North Ferriby United (Conference North) These are the only three I can remember at the moment but I'm sure others will come to me!
lee Bennett who plays for the rec is steves brother as far as I know, decent player who always seems to play well when I've watched the rec,he's definitely not scared of getting stuck in,thats for sure. I was watching one Wednesday evening before xmas and lee had to be substituted, the lad stood at the side of me was laughing because he said he was tagged and had to be back in the house before ten bells, again not sure how true this is.
Oh, I forgot - Vito Manone (Sunderland) - tripe for us, now getting ready for a League Cup final at Wembley!
He was never our player though. Harsh reality is most of academy not good enough and that not just at clubs like Barnsley. Steade was gonna be LB with Stones RB for example
I think RNL could well be approaching a crossroads in his Barnsley career, been around the fringes under 5 different managers for what seems like an age now but as of yet never managed to push on to a first team regular. Next season is a big 1 for reuben or it could well be his last at oakwell.
All that and still only 20. It is time he started to make an impact but I think he has developed ok along the way, he's had some good games for us. He was probably brought into the team too early.
I think Reuben will get his chance under Danny. It's up to him to take it, or he'll be out the door and down a league.
