    I've held the opinion for a long time that every academy player should have to take their refereeing qualifications and spend Saturday's refereeing in lower leagues to gain experience, before working their way up the leagues, should they choose this as a career when that certain proportion fails as professional footballers.

    That way we have a pool of qualified and capable individuals who have at least played the game to a level of competance, and by having professional referees football is also giving some of these lads who don't make it a lifeline of a career in the game.

    They're also fit enough to keep up with play and run the line etc.

    It also means that players like Bruce Dyer would have learn't the off side rule!
