Only going as far back as Bobby Robson here.
And for those pedants, yes I know, there is hardly a generation of difference between some of those managers - but you know what I mean.

could very well be Sven if not bobby himself - that Italia 90 was good enough to get further than any since however, you've got to think we had a real chance to win the last world cup
Is that best or most hyped generation? Hardly any of the current/Svens lot would have got in the 1990 team.

England, during my lifetime, have had very few world-class players. They've had some good ones, but Gascoigne apart, which of England's midfielders or strikers would have got into the Brazil teams of 1994, 1998, 2002 or 2006? Brazil being the benchmark that sides need to aspire to if they're going to win major tournaments. Beckham at a push? Would you have Shearer instead of Ronaldo or Romario? Scholes instead of Rivaldo or Kaka? England's players have always, always been over-hyped. More so now because the Premiership happens to produce good sides.
Agreed, for a country that seems to stifle individualism and push the team ethic , our inability to produce a team is somewhat mystifying.

There have been one or two players over the years that are world class Lineker Gascoigne Gerrard Owen - for a couple of seasons till he got crocked Personally I think if a younger Bobby Robson had managed the team that Sven Managed we would have done a lot better
RE: could very well be Sven Thought our best chance of winning the world cup was 2002 really. We were beating Brazil. If we'd taken them out there wasn't much left in - the standard was quite poor that year. Germany made it to the final despite the fact that we spanked them in the qualification 5-1 away.
