Just working on an article looking ahead to the 15 year promotion anniversary, and the thought crossed me, which players out of this team would get into Danny's promotion squad?

I agree with the sentiment that this is the strongest management team we've had in years, especially given the budget Keith has had to work with.

I know Danny hardly spent millions, but attracting players with the wage demands of Hendrie/Wilkinson/de Zeeuw was still huge and I'm not sure we could do that now.

    What's everyone's thoughts?

I don't think anyone would. Steele would be the closest and when JOB is at his best he would also be near. IMO.

If it's squad and not necessarily first XI regularly then...

    Luke Steele.
    Stephen Foster
    Jacob Butterfield
    Craig Davies
    Vaz Te.

Instead of Eaden at right wing back?

    Give over

    in my opinion yes

depends what you're after i suppose. worked for eaden as a wing back, but hassell is the better defender.
so to conclude eaden as a wing back, hassell in a back four.
    hope that makes sense

I don't think any would get in the 96/97 team, maybe Butterfield, Va Te and Steele would get a place on the bench...

That's nothing against the current players, different times with different money available...

Steele , Davies, Vaz Te , Butterfield , Foster in the squad but not the team. That team wasn't full of brilliant individual talent but it just gelled!

Agree Hassell is a better defender

But so many goals that season came from Eaden getting down the wing. Putting a player like Hassell in the promotion winning team would seriously effect the balance of the side.

I can't see that any of the current squad would get in to the 96/97 team. And as Wilson operated with a small squad I think if he had any of them on the books he would sell them. He'd probably keep Steele as a back up keeper and Butterfield as a good prospect for the future. IMHO and all that.

Agree about different monies being available

Wilson's squad would have been on a pittance compared to the current squad.

Keith Hill admitted this week that his transfer budget for this season has been £1.8 million. That's almost double the cost of Wilson's entire squad. And on a par with the entire annual wages.

I'm a Jim O'Brien fan, and boy do I wish he was playing today...

But I fail to see what he's done at the club what would put him in Danny's squad...

Also, with Danny's 3-5-2 system, where would you fit Jim O'Brien?

Times have changed though Jay and players' wages are much different than they were 15 years ago. The highest paid player at BFC at that time would have been on about 3k per week, which might be less than players are on now, but it was the going rate back then

I think Perkins would be a match for Shez, Butterfield would improve on Jovo, Davies/Vaz would match Wilko and thats it.

    It's my opinion Jim O'Brien

Could offer an alternative style of width play to that of Martin Bullock with his work rate and willingness to help out the defence.

Only Steele would get in the squad for me. O'Brien nowhere near.

Jay's point is interesting and shows how football has moved on. It's not so much the good players earning top money, that would always happen. But the leagues now are full of crap to average players also on silly money.

Back in 1996 football seemed to have much more common sense. I wish it was more like that now, on and off the pitch.
