Currently have Norton but it's expiring and I've been told McAfee is better... any recommendations?

And where's the best place to purchase from?

I have used Norton, found it was not good enough. Used McAfee last year and found that it was similar to Norton.
At the moment I use Kaspersky and it is brilliant for the money, about £30.00. It has 3 licences available, ideal if you have more than 1 pc. Updates every hour, 24 hour support, trojan detection, malware detection,anti-spam, and it gives you great options like if the registry changes do you allow or not, has a great parental control as well which you can turn on and off. You can buy it from PC World
    Hope this helps

    Seconded.

Best AV software I've ever used. Tiny footprint, no slowdown. Regularly takes the honours in comparison tests. Cheap as chips on eBay, or try to find somewhere knocking out the 2008 box cheap; PC World usually have a few hidden away behind the 'new' product. Whichever version you buy, it will auto-upgrade to the 2009 one when you install. Don't go near AVG - the current incarnation is riddled with holes; if you want a freebie, then Avast is probably your best bet.

Re Kaspersky - do you have to pay an annual subscription please?

    Thanks.

Well not a subscription as such, but you need to buy or renew your license each year. You can either buy a new retail package or renew your license via their website. Ebay's your cheapest option, though.
