It was Mister Number Maker

Be careful though, he's got a little gang.

Don't suggest he's a bit OTT or they'll have you in jackboots before knocking-off time.

    You tell 'em.

If some people had their way then football grounds might be places where you could have a family day out without having to listen to bad language, racist abuse and aggressive intolerance.

I take my lad to games but I'm not happy that he has to listen to and see behaviour that he wouldn't experience elsewhere, is there something wrong in wanting this to stop?

RE: Did Mr Number maker do anything himself

at the time ? like give his details to the steward as a witness to the event. Makes me laff, the cops have just had a conference and the National Black Police Association have said the police are still intitutionally racist.. Well its an offence isnt it, and if they see it then shouldnt they be reporting it instead of moaning about it at confereces. Same with footy, anybody pissed at racism in the ground should have the bottle to go to a steward explain what he /she has heard and point out the culprit. THATS the only way it will ever get stopped. Stand up and be counted at the time...

    RE: You tell 'em.

I've taken both my kids to Oakwell when they were young. The bad language didn't bother me as they'd heard it already at school. I have to say though racist comments did and I had to explain to them what they meant and why, in my opinion they were/are wrong.

Having said that we've come a long way from 1990 when the majority of the Ponte were 'monkey chanting' when Agana scored for the Blunts in an FA cup replay. Also bannanas being thrown at Winston Campbell at the lane.

It's difficult the change peoples' prejudices and it will take time.

    Someone said:

'Don't suggest he's a bit OTT or they'll have you in jackboots before knocking-off time.'

Which seems to state that complaining about that sort of behaviour is a bit OTT.

Or does it mean something else?

    You're right.

    It means something else.

Well mine have heard it too, but not that often I hope.

I agree it is much better but that doesn't mean to say we shouldn't continue to push for change until it is totally eradicated.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever be totally eradicated.

    what's the real debate here??

    education and upbringing!
people that chant racial abuse are limited, in terms of expressing themselves, by their education and upbringing. they are incapable of expressing themselves any other way. its wrong - imho - but until they are educated and understand, for themselves, that its wrong we are going to struggle.
would a better approach be to ignore bad behaviour like this? idiot shouts somethng stupid due to his stupidity - people react = issue. people ignore idiot because he is an idiot and should be ignored and idiot does not have the satisfaction of upsetting anyone.
mr number maker chose to be upset by what he heard and the lack of action by a steward.

RE: what's the real debate here??

education and upbringing do influence... but are not the complete answer... if that was the case then intelligent and articulate beings would not be racist... and clearly they are!!
