there will be other candidates to see. I know I would never have appointed anyone to a job unless I had conducted a proper short list and interview procedure . Not doing so leaves you open to criticism with no answers
I'm sure someone was saying... ...don't wait for applications, identify who you want and go and get him.
I'm sure someone was also saying... .....sacking Davey might not necessarily mean we get someone better. That said, last time, we interviewed at least 3 applicants to my knowledge.
Davey plus two, not exactly 100% sure of the names and I dont want to speculate for fear of a letter correcting me but both said they wanted at least £2 million to spend on players keep us up and Davey didnt. I reckon I've just answered my own question though.
RE: I'm sure someone was saying... I wouldn't have waited for applications but they should have had a list of targets identified, and surely Robins would not been the first name. Have we been knocked back by anybody without it being reported? And besides, the applications might not be exactly 'box office' either. I would be happy with Robins, prepared to give him a chance as he seems promising, and it is a risk, but I believe salary has a lot to do with it. We can't afford Curbs or Jewell.
I agree with you. Grass, greener etc etc. There's no doubt Davey had finished though and we needed something new. I know you've always talked about the budget we had to operate on be it playing or coaching staff (I know you've said that's why Blackwell didn't get the job) - is that not the reason they've gone for Robins, the manager they feel is most likely to be able to work within that budget? Knowledge of lower leagues, players he feels can make that jump (and they can, just look at Peterbrough, Wolves et al. They're not all Garry Jones & Dwayne Mattis). He's a gamble but Cryne must think he's the best candidate from the applications that have come in. I wanted Jewell but he's on a cushty number with SKY and was earning a packet at Derby, Coppell only just finished with Reading and Curbishley would come out in a rash if got outside the M25. It was never, ever going to happen. And I wouldn't touch Ince with barge pole after his performance in the Liverpool game in the Prem. The w@nker.
It's cost them more then that hasn't it? Ah well. BFC have never really learned from mistakes, which is probably why they saw Davey as a good fit. I'll happily give Robins my support, but once again it's been a PR fiasco. We have no clue when it comes to the media "permission to speak to" is as much as the press needed to know. We appear to have conducted a public interview of one candidate. Told the press he's great and we're waiting for PC to come back for the photo opportunity.
I shouldn't think they'll be having sleepless nights wondering if they've left themselves open to criticism.
They're getting it already and it'll go on going on whoever they appoint.

S.M. Robins - Parkin Business One main difference for me between the two is that Robins had played virtually all his career at the top level, Parkin didnt. Parkin's choice of players was shocking and very much Rochdale level, Flynn, Gibbs etc. Hopefully Robins (if he is our next manager) will have a better judge of players ability based on his playing experience.
In order to have tagets identified you have to know what you have to offer and if there is a likelyhood of that offer being acceptable by those targets. If you dont have such inf then you might as well keep your cards close to your chest and invite applications, after all you loose nothing if the interviewee says your package is not good enough and walks away after all they have come to you, but you never know in this world someone who you may never have thought to target might say fine, lets give it a go... Applications every time for me .... and no press until after the event, too much of todays happenings are caused by media hype
RE: In order to have tagets identified you have to know Robins might not have applied. He is in a job that, until we came knocking, he seemed very content with. If he was our top target then we had to go and get him or it wouldn't happen. The same goes for any target. Head-hunt, then interview them.
Spot on. When it comes to publicity and being media savvy, we've still some way to go before we reach the Dark Ages.
i concur - a la Constantine, Adam, Jamie Ward etc there is huge potential for this to turn into a pr disaster. ie robins stays at lowly Rotherham and we end up with an obvious second choice.
