Tell me about it. English wusses complaining about a bit of wind and rain. Pah.

This is the worst weather I have known in 13 years being here. On Monday and Tuesday we had blowing snow in frigid temps - we have huge snowdrifts everywhere. The pavement alongside my kids' school has disappeared under a 15-foot snowdrift (no exaggeration).

Today it feels like -28C in Calgary (and -45C 2 hours south near the Montana border). Yes, you know it's cold when you step outside and your nostril hair freezes, your glasses steam up and freeze on both sides, and your eyes water and freeze before the drops have rolled down your cheek. This is not much fun.

Post your woes to the inhabitants of the Philippines...I'm sure they'll feel really sorry for you.

I was provisionally accepted for a job with the Red River coal company nearly 20 years ago,as they were giving us details about where we would be living they told us about the extreme winters, having to plug the jeeps in so they didn't freeze up,food supplies arriving by water planes, bears, wolves the lot,I think it was in the Canadian rockies.
I was going to go until I dropped on a bloke that had been out there and he told me the locals treated them like scabs as they wernt too keen on foreigners taking jobs.

That's a bloody horrible feeling! I encountered that last Christmas at Walmart in Sylvan Lake.

Spot on. Calgary is a lovely place. (Though I wouldn't chose to live there for various reasons)

But from what my sister will probably tell you... it's the fastest growing city in the world.

They can't fill jobs quick enough. If you can put up with the seasons there, it's a great place to live, by all accounts.

How come you moved to Canada, was it a job or a fella?

My wife and I are planning on going to Canada for our next big holiday, probably in 18 months time. In the summer, not when it's -25! Don't know if we'll make it to Calgary, I'll have to check what's there, but we'll definitely be going to Jasper and Banff, then to Galcier National park and down through Montana to Yellowstone. Intend to start off in Vancouver and do that train journey to Whistler and on to Jasper.

No my fella and I moved out here because we wanted to try something new and wanted to ski / snowboard lots. Kids soon put paid to the latter (well for a while at least). I actually much prefer the weather here to the UK - as long as you can put up with these arctic spells from time-to-time. Summers are fantastic and it rarely rains. Our temperatures vary from +30C to -30C every year.

As for a trip out here, let us know as and when you start planning it as I can give you some tips. Certainly if you do the Rocky Mountaineer train journey, you really should try and upgrade to the Gold leaf service if you want to see the scenery (glass roof on the top) otherwise it's just trees at eye-level flashing past you. I have been to Vancouver and Jasper a few times, and visited Glacier National Park in Montana last summer (2012). Breathtaking scenery that I never get bored with.

Now for this weather to break.............

Yup, loads of work here (in certain sectors at least). Average wage is $65,000 a year in Calgary, with many workers in the oil patch well into 6-figures. Unfortunately the knock-on effect is that the average house price here is $450,000, so it's pretty expensive by UK standards.

    That's brave and adventurous.

I'll definitely be asking for advice when we get round to booking stuff if that's OK. Thanks for the offer.

It does make me laugh on programmes like Wanted Downunder..."We want to move to Australia cos average wages are much higher than here. Oh, hang on, house prices are also much higher, and cost of living too".

    Yes, that's how economics works.

Living abroad would be an amazing experience though, well done for making it happen

I should have called myself b@stard_freezing_tyke cause I have been for the last few days.
Got the cross country skis waxed though for when the temperature climbs up.
