What's it like for a short break, ie. a few days away? Anywhere else, couple of hours away that's any good?
Doesn't matter about being quiet on this occasion! Not looking for a night out or anything, just a few quiet days..
It's not quiet... ...feckin seagulls drove me mad when we went last year. Go though, it is great. Spend some time walking or cycling in the Esk valley enall if you can - brill. (Y)
Yeah, we normally go for a few days in london, but if the weather's gonna be nice, may as well make the most of it.
just got back had 2nights - 3 days there. great for a short break - plenty to do in whitby and the surrounding areas. fish and chips, goths, dracula, the Abbey, the harbour, the whalebones, Capt Cook. and pubs...!!! loads of them..!!! real ale in most of them. not many places better for a couple of days away within a couple of hours
Some must do's Magpie Cafe - not the cheapest but the best. Straightforward fish & chips wi mushy peas are delicious but be more adventurous well worth it Walk all up the beach as far as you can at low tide then have lunch at the pub in Sandsend. Pop into the gallery there if you have a few bob spare for an unusual souvenir Walk up the streets & steps to the abbey. £5 in and not much to see but lots of quirky shops to firtle in A day out in Whitby relaxes me more than a week in Scabby or Blacky
RE: Some must do's Is that the Sutcliffe gallery? Got a really nice framed photo from there, and it was on sale because it was an old style frame they weren't using anymore
go to shambles in afternoon sit outside on verranda few jars and watch the world go bye its what its all about
RE: Some must do's Pub in Sandsend is "The Hart", had dinner in there on Saturday (reasonable price and lots on the plate) and also met a fellow Barnsley fan from Wakefield in there. Its a nice walk on the beach from there to Whitby and you can also take the dogs on too. Goathland (not Goatland as previously posted) is around 8 miles away and is a nice area to have a walk around, but be aware if you are taking dogs as the sheep wonder around at their leisure. Can be very busy due to tourists looking for characters from Heartbeat but you can escape this by going down to Beck Hole where there is a nice pub for a decent drink. Glaisdale is around a further 6 mile from Goathland and this has fantastic walks around the area (part of the coast to coast route). This has a fantastic pub in the village called the Arncliffe Arms, superb food and a nice pint. All in all I don't think you can go far wrong in the Yorkshire Dales, superb scenery and wildlife and the odd pub every now and again!!!!
RE: Some must do's This is the one http://www.sutcliffe-gallery.co.uk/ Loads of photos of Whitby from the 19th century, worth a look round and some of the prices not bad either
The last place of its kind.
And when they're gone they're gone.
Go mate, you won't be disappointed.
