Some American academics posted on the r/Barnsley reddit asking people to fill in a survey about rivalries in sports. I don't think they realised that most of the stuff on that forum is people posting pictures of their nice dog walk near Dodworth and so on. Anyway, thought I'd put it here in case anyone feels like filling in their survey. (Editing to say I've just been to have a look myself, and it's a bit of a grind to be honest. Feels like they could have boiled it down to just a few pertinent questions. So be warned - if you've time to kill and really want to let people know how much you dislike the Massive and why then fill yer boots, if you're in a hurry give it a miss).
Pretended I watched us in the 60s/70s and put "Workington, Bradford PA and Barrow" as our main rivals
Q. Who do we see as our biggest rivals ?. Personally I detest leeds. ( probably down to lots of local armchair fans. Living on leeds glory yrs) But I guess its wendy for most of our fans. Thing is. We are no one's biggest rivals. Would have been Donny/Rotherham in my younger days. But that's worn off due to lack of games between us.
We might see some clubs as our rivals but no club will see us as their number 1 rival that they always want to beat more than any other team.
I've always thought it depends on where in Barnsley yr from. If you are Royston way (or even Wakefield or Castleford, then it's Leeds). If you're Penistone, it's Huddersfield, and if your Birdwell or Hoyland, it's Sheffield. If if you're near the centre, it's all of the bar stewards
Being from west York’s I like to beat Leeds and hudders. presume barnsley rivals are the S Yorks teams. Not sure why everyone wants Wednesday down, I like to play our rivals.
Leeds were always the rivals for me as a youth in Royston. There’d be a few Leeds fans at school and it grew from there with a fair bit of banter
Disagree - Penistone is full of MASSIVES, telling anyone who'll listen how they're bigger than Barcelona. Damian and I fvcking hated them, even before we started going to Oakwell. They seemed to score a last-minute winner every time they played. He and I were watching the 1993 FA Cup final at my parents' house, and running up and down the street, screaming, when they conceded the winner. School would have been fvcking awful the next day, and the legendary Andy Linighan had brought an end to that prospect.
A recent poll from fan banter.co.uk of all 92 clubs: Barnsleys Rivals ranked: 1. Sheff Wed 2. Sheff Utd 3. Leeds 4. Huddersfield 5. Rotherham.
Do they? Generally been Rovrum or Scunny in my experience. But from that fan banter list Barnsley are sandwiched between those 2.
Just filled in the survey and it struck me that I really couldn’t say why I had this intense dislike for Sheff Wed. When my daughter was about 8 she said Dad why don’t we like Sheff Wed my reply was full of insight and knowledge “I have no idea we just do”.
Looks about right to me. The Blunts were further down the list before the Hume/Morgan incident and were top of my list for a year or two after.
A donny fan I know says in the 60s and 70s he was brought up on a diet Barnsley, Barnsley, Barnsley. Apparently we played them more back then. Where as it makes sense fans growing up 1980-2010 wouldnt feel that strongly as we never played.
I think the Donny thing is very one-sided, they seem to hate us but personally I've never really seen them as any sort of threat. Maybe that comes from being from Bolton on Dearne, half way between Barnsley and Donny. Lots of kids at school were Donny fans and there was never any real rivalry like there was with the Wendies. You might be right about Hudds though.
