Riddle of Polish man badly hurt in street A POLISH man is in a coma after being found unconscious in the road in Barnsley. The man, believed to be 36-year-old Krzysztof Pawal Stalmach, was found on Dodworth Road close to Springfield Street at 3am on Sunday. He was taken to Barnsley hospital where tests showed he had sustained a serious head injury. DI Colin Wilson said Mr Stalmach was being kept sedated and had not regained consciousness. His condition was today described as serious. DI Wilson said they had not ruled out any explanation for Mr Stalmach's collapse. He was found with cash on him but some other personal items were unaccounted for. He added: "We are trying to trace his movements on Saturday evening - where he has been, who he has been with and how he ended up in that condition. "He was found by three witnesses who were making their way home after a night out. I think he is local but extensive house-to-house enquiries, including local pubs, have not produced anything of significance. We may have to expand investigations to include the Polish community and town centre pubs and bars. "We would like to hear from anyone who was in the aforementioned area around 3am or who may have been with, or seen, Mr Stalmach on Saturday evening." He is white, 5ft 9in, of medium build, with dark brown hair and unshaven. He wore a denim jacket, black and red jumper, blue jeans and black training shoes with white markings. Anyone with information can contact the Operation Bar Incident Room at Barnsley Police Station on 01226 736351 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. 14 November 2006
