From the Daily Mirror Fans blasted Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin yesterday for demanding an increase in his £80,000-a-week wages – because he thinks he’s paying too much income tax. New signing Arshavin, 27, has found he takes home less cash here that he did in his native Russia, even though his gross salary is far higher. It’s because in Russia he was paying 13 per cent tax – and here he is clobbered by the new 50p top rate. Now, Arshavin has ordered his agent to renegotiate his contract with the Gunners and earn him an increase. But fans yesterday said the midfielder was displaying “sheer greed.” Arsenal fan David Mayo, from High Wycombe, Bucks, said players like Arshavin should “stop whinging” David added: “Even after tax, he’s going to be on at least £40,000 a week, so he’s hardly struggling, is he?” If Arshavin gets his rise, other Premier League big earners are sure to follow his lead. He has warned other foreign players seeking Premier League clubs to be aware of the tax situation. He said: “It’s important to understand clearly what money you are going to get and what taxes to pay, so that there are no unpleasant surprises of the kind I am facing now. I’m getting less than I expected. My agent is sorting it out.” Does he know what he sounds like? Still going to be taking home around 45k a week! That's more than what I and most others who go to watch football and pay his and others' ridiculous wages earn in a fecking year, and I'm not exactly starving. Reality check needed. And the fact that he earned more back in Russia?! Where his weekly salary was around ten years average wages for most Zenit fans. Jesus wept. "I'll get my agent to sort it out". I hope that Arsenal tell his agent where to go.
Gives football a bad name. In the middle of a dreadful recession - that bloke couldn't alienate himself more from the supporters. Disgusting.
Hang on a minute I think there are at least 100 in front of him regarding greed , why pick on him ?????????
RE: Hang on a minute He kept harping on about how he was only leaving Zenit for footballing reasons, nothing to do with money. Seems like it was all hot air. The guy comes from a country where most people struggle to eat properly for fecks sake, and he's there whinging that his expected 60 grand a week is now only 45. It's actually obscene. Am not saying he's the only one, far from it, and I'd guess that his agent isn't exactly blameless, but to come out with such **** in the middle of a very serious recession is a complete piss take.
That could be interesting! Hanging out with some Wednesday fans?! I'm working so can't watch it, our bank holiday was last week. Gutted.
there will probably be some blunts in champs. got £50 on one team winning at half time, the other winning at full time for 28/1 and 25/1 so hoping for a topsy turvey match.
He's Every Right To Complain He's earning less by joining Arsenal and the rich shouldn't be so penalised by our government for being able to earn a really good wage. The rest of Europe are more reasonable with the high tax band. Like Russia 13% and Spain 25%.
RE: He's Every Right To Complain If you're earning that much you have no right whatsoever to complain about the high taxation. The public services in Spain and especially in Russia are atrocious compared with those in Britain. Spain has no NHS and you have to pay to use the decent roads there, Russia's hospitals look like something from 28 days later. Even the staff. The only friend I have who is affected by the 50% income tax band only just creeps into it, and by his own admission has more money than he knows what to do with. And he still takes home in a year less than what Arshavin does in 3 weeks. Oh, and another thing, the income tax band for non-nationals is 30% in Russia, not 13%.
Arshavin is the most honest player I have ever seen and he payed some of his own money to join arsenal i cant see him demanding more the papers lie !!
you can tell the honest ones just by looking at them?, you ought to be a magistrate mate, you'd save us all a fortune. (doh)
RE: He's Every Right To Complain Would you be happy to pay more in taxes then Dreamy? So the rich can pay less?
Plus the fact That he is not living in the 'Mafia' controlled, corrupt, country. I'm sure its worth the extra tax just to get out of Russia.
I think even at 40% it was a bit strict. The 50% tax group could end up losing us money in the long run if they decide to work abroad. You could have really inteligent people not trying as hard to make something of themselves because they can earn just as much paying less tax in a less taxing (pardon the pun) job.
