...well before Hemsworth? I can't remember.

Didn't shut up about it. Doesn't come for crosses, poor distribution, not vocal enough etc.

I bet whoever it was doesn't rate Alnwick either.

Well it wasnt me............but who ever it was I agree with them

I think Steele is a very quick keeper and good at shot stopping but other than that I think he is suspect.........he definitly dosent command his own penalty area like a keeper should do
Probably Steele just isnt tall enough.........would love to see Muller or someone like Muller (not Muller light) int nets fot TARN

Unfortunately I agree with this bit. I still rate his ability to keep goals out though so I 100% want him to stay. Whilstever he is doing that, the rest can play second fiddle. I wonder if that's why he was made captain, to try and make him feel more able to command his area better?

I think most people can see Steele's weaknesses but fortunately most fans also see his strengths and can therefore form a balanced opinion about him. His strengths outweigh his weaknesses and he wins us more points than he costs us. The key part of his game (keeping the ball out of the net) is his main strength and IMO he is one of the best outside of the premier league. We will not get a better keeper with the budget we have and I hope he stays.

Maybe that's the problem - we can't afford a keeper of his quality on the budget we have.

If he keeps ball out of net I don't give a **** how tall he is.

Completely right Mario, it's rare that you find a keeper who excels at all aspects of the job. It's about having a balance of attributes that add up to regular good performances and Luke certainly has. I'd rather Luke only came for the crosses he is confident of claiming, rather than charging out and flapping like many do. If stats were analysed, we would probably find that his decision making is pretty good and his high shot stopping ability is his best option. No-one has mentioned Luke's great record when one on one with a striker, how many times have we seen him dash at the feet of a striker with great speed and anticipation. That skill is more than simply shot stopping. It is not often that a lone striker rounds Luke to score.

Clive Baker was probably shortest keeper we've had and one of the best I've seen in a Barnsley shirt.

Agreed that Steele does have his faults, any player at this level will otherwise they'll be playing at a higher level. But he is an excellent keeper at this level. Criticisms of not commanding his area and coming for high balls - one of the worst we had for that was David Watson and he was touted as a future England international before his injury.

Re: Who was it that for ages said that Luke Steele was **** and we needed a new keepe

Personally i want to know where the **** the money keeps disappearing. One minute we hear we have no debt and will break even, the next minute we sell millions of pounds worth of players, net a million from a cup run and have to get rid of players we already have because suddenly we cant afford them. And thats just this year, last year it was the same story with butterfield money, prior to that it was shackell and vaz te. Where does the money go? If we're in debt and paying it off fine. If we're going to make a loss but these sales change that to break even then fine. But we never hear that. We hear that we make a small profit, THEN we sell players and yet the budget goes down and the money is seen less than HT after a german victory.

Hemsie, you are in danger of losing the few friends on here you have. It's not our fault you know very little about football.

Agreed but like Whitey said, Flitcroft has a budget. He decides where best to spend his money.

Alnwick was obviously brought in as long term replacement to Steele and remember, Steele wasn't on the list Keith gave the board before he was sacked to renew the contract...

Do you think he's shagged Hayley McQueen? If he has/is I'd reject the contract and just retire from all activities other than nobbing her.

Go to the meetings with Don. He happily gives a basic breakdown. The opportunity is there to ask for this information, so it's not reasonable to make a fuss on here. For example, Keith Hill's 'on loan saviours' who came in last November put us in the red on operational budgeting.

If that's the case I can reluctantly accept it (a keeper of Luke's quality does cost a bit of money) but for someone to claim he is **** and propose Carlo Nash as a replacement is just ridiculous in the extreme.

I thought Keith didn't go over budget. Only Mark Robins does that.

So why bother offering Steele terms and just go with Alnwick instead?

I seem to recall Don said that the signings came out of his budget and didn't at the same time.
